MINDEN, La. &045; This was not the start Wilkinson Christian coach Ray Olive was expecting from his Rams in Game 1 of the first round of the MPSA Class A South State playoffs.
WCCA, the District 6-A champion, did not play like a team that had been on a roll at the end of the regular season as the Rams got just three hits while the Glenbrook Apaches took advantage of timely hitting and five errors to take an 11-1 win in five innings.
&uot;We looked very lethargic. We looked non-involved,&uot; Olive said. &uot;We lacked focus and we played with no heart. It’s hard to win a playoff game with five physical errors and that’s not counting the mental errors.&uot;
WCCA (13-4) now have to win a doubleheader at home Friday to win the series and move on to the second round or the season is over.
The Rams scored their only run and got two of their three hits in the top of the first inning off Glenbrook pitcher Flownay (no first name given). Ruston Cado led off with a double and moved to third when Taylor Fontenot hit into a 6-3 groundout. C.ado then scored on a single by Spike Deville.
The rest of the game belonged to the Apaches. Flownay held the Rams scoreless and allowed just one hit the rest of the game and got more than enough run support.
ACCS 10, Parklane 9
McCOMB &045; Nearly 24 hours after clinching the MPSA District 3-AA title with a shutout win over Copiah, the Rebels probably knew the Class AAA Pioneers would give them all they could handle.
And that’s what usually happens when these two teams take on each other on the baseball diamond. Tuesday night’s game was no exception as the Rebels, ranked No. 3 in the latest Clarion-Ledger MPSA poll, got a two-run home run from David Trisler in the top of the sixth to rally for the win.
&uot;We came out a little flat, which I was afraid of,&uot; Rebels head coach Gill Morris said. &uot;They scored four runs in the bottom of the second and we had three errors (that inning).&uot;
ACCS (18-3) got back in the game thanks to Timmy Foster’s three-run home run in the third. inning, which gave the Rebels a much-needed lift.
Parklane scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 6-3.
ACCS, however, answered with five runs of its own in the top of the fourth for its first lead of the game at 8-6.
&uot;We had four hits in the third and five in the fourth,&uot; Morris said. &uot;New had a two-out double in the fourth. We rose to the occasion and fought back. We played better defense after the second inning.&uot;
