VIDALIA, La. &045; Jessie Harveston and Crystal Harper are two young women on a mission &045; to become part of Vidalia High’s first dance team. And if the amount of practice they’re putting in is any indication, they just might make the cut.
When The Dart found the two practicing midway through Sunday afternoon on Locust Street, they seemed to be nowhere near stopping. &uot;We practiced six hours on Friday,&uot; said Jessie Harveston who, with longtime best friend Crystal Harper, was practicing the dance routine every team hopeful must perform during tryouts to Brittney Spears’ &uot;Do Something.&uot;
Consulting written dance moves every now and then and helping each other through the more difficult parts, the rest of the time was spent practicing segments of the routine over and over again.
It’s something they’ll practice over and over again before mock tryouts Monday and, finally, the real thing on Tuesday.
Getting frustrated with some of the complicated routine’s twists and turns now and then, the two were troopers nevertheless, making dozens of kicks and performing back bends on just the right beat.
It’s a lot of trouble for the girls, who will be juniors at Vidalia High in the fall, to go through, but they’re determined to be two of the up to 20 girls who will make the cut.
&uot;We want to support our team and our school,&uot; Harveston said. &uot;Besides, we love to dance.&uot;
