NATCHEZ &045; If you’re a Saints fan, the bad news is that Trinity was blown out in both halves of a doubleheader against Adams County Tuesday night.
The good news is that the Saints are young, with only one senior, and steadily improving, Trinity head coach Matt Mason said.
&uot;Our goal is just to get better,&uot; Mason said. &uot;We are looking for leadership this summer. We’re looking at some different guys on the hill. We just want to get better. This is like glorified practice for us.&uot;
But Trinity has improved greatly from last year, AC head coach Ron Rushing said.
&uot;Trinity’s definitely better from last summer,&uot; Rushing said. &uot;Coach Mason and (assistant coach Bubba) Griffey have done a great job.&uot;
That improvement didn’t show in the final scores, as the Rebels won 6-0 in the first and 11-4 in the second game, but it may show up down the road.
In the first game, Trinity’s Ridley looked strong on the mound, giving up just two hits.
&uot;I thought Stevan looked great in the first game,&uot; Mason said. &uot;That’s as well as I’ve seen him throw. He gave up just two hits.&uot;
Foster looked even better, pitching five innings of shutout ball and allowing only one hit for the win.
The Rebels scored two runs in the second and four in the third, taking advantage of two Saints errors to put the game, which lasted only slightly more than an hour, away.
In the second game, Trinity’s offense came alive briefly in the first inning. With one out, Ridley walked and stole second and third bases. Parker Brumfield, who transferred to Trinity from Cathedral after the spring, knocked Ridley in with a single to right, setting things up for Kyle Dunaway, who slapped a home run to left to put the Saints up 3-0 early.
The Rebels came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the inning, scoring eight runs to take the lead for good.
Brian Sanderson was hit by a pitch and stole second before Cole Bradford hit a home run to left to score them both. Foster singled and stole second, then moved to third on a sacrifice fly by David Alton New.
Eric Perry drove Foster in with a double. Matt Barnes walked and Dustin Carroll doubled Perry in. Corey Walker and Luke Brumfield got consecutive walks to load the bases for the top of the order.
Sanderson drove Carroll in with a sacrifice fly to left and Cole Bradford got his third RBI of the inning with a double that scored Walker. Foster doubled to score Brumfield before New flew out to end the inning.
Adams County added a run in the second when Perry was hit by a pitch and eventually scored when Sanderson walked with the bases loaded.
Trinity scored again in the third, when Clint Easom singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Adams County added two more runs in the third.
