Hobdys building new house overlooking the river

NATCHEZ &045; Location, location, location &045; this mantra is the driving force behind Carol and Braxton Hobdy’s new home.

Their own architect, Johnny Waycaster, claims the home’s &uot;view is the best in Adams County.&uot;

The property, just north of the National Cemetery, directly overlooks the Mississippi and Old River.

After 10 years of owning the land, the Hobdys began construction on their &uot;old-age house,&uot; as Carol calls it, in December.

One of the most interesting aspects of the home itself is the dogtrot, a breezeway that cuts through the center of the home. It literally lets the oudoors in, cooling the home.

And it’s already working, says Carol, who said she was too cold to sit outside Sunday evening. Imagine &045; Mississippi being too cold in June.

In addition to the new home, the Hobdys brought along something old &045; the former home of the Estes family, one of three that were recently removed from Fort Rosalie.

However, the Esteses were unaware of the relocation before the Estes matriarch, Lorene, watched the cypress-built home being transported on U.S. 61 North near the McDonald’s where she was eating.

Now a guesthouse, the structure sits next to the new Hobdy home on the lookout.

It is also Carol’s labor of love. &uot;I’m quite impressed with her abilities,&uot; says Waycaster.

The Estes family members have all visited their old home and, according to Don Estes, &uot;we’re all just fascinated by it. Lots of memories.&uot;

And Carol has insisted that when the homes are finished, the Estes family come stay for a weekend.
