JONESVILLE, La. &045; Winnsboro scored at least one run in each of the five innings &045; Vidalia didn’t score in any of them.
Just in case math isn’t your forte, that adds up to a 9-0 win for Winnsboro Tuesday at the coach pitch sub-district tournament in Jonesville. Vidalia struggled at the plate for the entire game, getting just five hits in the game while striking out a collective six times.
&uot;If you don’t hit the ball you don’t win,&uot; Vidalia head coach Whest Shirley said. &uot;We knew coming in Winnsboro was probably the team to beat in this tournament and we knew they would play solid defense.&uot;
Winnsboro will play until 8 p.m. Thursday against South Franklin. Vidalia will face Catahoula at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Winnsboro, on the other hand, seemed like it could hardly miss the ball.
&uot;We hit the ball well,&uot; Winnsboro head coach Chris Sullivan said. &uot;They’re really a team. If one guy’s down, he’s not upset because he knows the rest of the guys will pick him up. This is probably the best game we’ve played. They’re having fun. Of course, when you win it’s always fun.&uot;
Winnsboro got off to a fast start in the game. Austin Davis led off with a hit and came in to score on Sam Skipper’s double. Skipper scored on a ground out by Peyton Jones to put Winnsboro up 2-0 in the first inning.
Winnsboro’s Aaron Monnin singled in the second and came in on Tyler Day’s single to put his team up 3-0. In the third, Winnsboro’s Ty Johnson singled. Two Winnsboro players lined out before Casey Richardson singled Johnson over. Johnson and Richardson scored on Jones’ double, putting Winnsboro up 5-0.
In the fourth, Kyle Sullivan led off with a single and later scored when Monnin reached on a fielder’s choice. Monnin scored when Day reached on another fielder’s choice.
Winnsboro added two final runs in the fifth inning. Johnson led off with a singled and moved over on Davis’ hit, but was tagged out going for third when Skipper reached on a fielder’s choice. Davis and Skipper both scored on Jones’ single that proved to be the final scoring in the game.
In the meantime, Vidalia struggled at the plate, turning in five innings without a run or a baserunner past second base.
&uot;They hit from No. 1 to 13 in their lineup and didn’t strike out,&uot; Shirley said. &uot;That’s how you win. You can’t have a bunch of strikeouts like we did.&uot;
Vidalia’s best scoring chance came in the third, when Drew McGivaren and Chandler Grayson had consecutive singles to start the inning. But a pop-up, fielder’s choice and strikeout ended the inning without a run.
Chris Sullivan attributed Winnsboro’s success to its maturity.
&uot;We’ve got an older team,&uot; he said. &uot;We only have three 7-year-olds and the rest are all 8.&uot;
Catahoula 9, Ferriday 1
Catahoula got all the runs it needed in the first, going up 5-0 early against Ferriday en route to a 9-1 win.
Ferriday struggled at the plate, stymied by a combination of hitting struggles and a tenacious Catahoula defense. Ferriday was eliminated from the tournament with the loss, its second in as many days.
&uot;We just couldn’t get anything started, that’s what it all boils down to,&uot; Ferriday head coach Lane Barlow said. &uot;But I’m proud of them. They had a good time out here.&uot;
Catahoula will face Vidalia at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Catahoula started the game out by making a statement with the bat. After a leadoff strikeout, five consecutive batters reached base and four of them scored. Quan O’Steen knocked in two runs with a single, but was out on a fielder’s choice.
Ryne Richard reached on that fielder’s choice and later scored on Wesley Doughty’s single, putting Catahoula up 5-0 in the first.
&uot;We hit the ball a little better today than we did yesterday,&uot; Catahoula head coach Eric Richard said. &uot;We got off to a fast start and then held on. You never know what you’re going to get from these kids.&uot;
Ferriday went down in order in the first.
Catahoula threated again in the second when Malik Collins and Cameron Spinks both singled, but a diving catch by Ferriday center fielder C.J. White retired Jacob Cater and Spinks was doubled off of first to end the inning.
But Ferriday’s downfall was its inability to get anything going offensively. The team didn’t score at all until the fourth when Cory Cowan led off with a single, moved up on White’s single and Jake Barlow’s and finally scored when Trey Book ground out, putting Ferriday on the board with what would be the team’s only run of the game.
&uot;It’s just our bats. Our bats were cold,&uot; Barlow said. &uot;They didn’t hit like they did in the regular season. We couldn’t get a rally started, and if you can’t get a rally started, you’re in trouble.&uot;
