Barnes keys Vidalia Majors to quick win

WINNSBORO, La. &045; What a game Devin Barnes as the Vidalia All-Stars opened up the Louisiana Dixie Youth District 5 Major League South sub-district tournament.

Barnes hit three home runs and had seven runs batted in while Caleb Vines overcame a tough start by shutting out Madison in the final five innings as Vidalia rallied to take a 13-3 win Saturday afternoon.

Barnes hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Vidalia an early 2-0 lead. Isaac (no first name given) hit a three-run home run off Vines in the bottom of the first to give Madison a 3-2 lead.

&uot;He was nervous,&uot; Vidalia head coach Tam Winston said. &uot;It took him a while to settle down. But once he did, he was OK.&uot;

Vidalia took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the third for a 5-3 lead, but Barnes wasn’t done yet.

Barnes hit his second two-run home run of the game in the top of the fifth and added a three-run home run in the top of the sixth as Vidalia scored four runs in both of those innings to put the game out of reach.

Barnes wasn’t the only player who did well at the plate. As part of Vidalia’s 16-hit attack, Dee Garrison, Jake Winston and Corey Wallington had a combined eight hits, including a home run and a double by Winston.

In Game 2, Ferriday lost to South Franklin 13-1. No other information on the game was available.

Ferriday will take on Madison at 4 p.m. today in a loser’s bracket game, followed by Vidalia against South Franklin at 6 p.m. in a winner’s bracket showdown.

Brookhaven Americans 5, Natchez 0

MCCOMB &045; John Gray, the grandson of Adams Christian headmaster John R. Gray, pitched a one-hitter as the Brookhaven Americans eliminated the Natchez 9s from the District 6 tournament Saturday night.

The only hit Gray gave up was a single by Zach Jones in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Brookhaven Americans broke a scoreless game in the top of the fourth when Landon Nix singled to score Hunter Foster, who reached on an error.

In the top of the fifth, Andrew Culver tripled and scored on passed ball. On the play, Natchez starting pitcher Tyler Buckles, covering home plate, was injured when Culver slid into him. Hunter Lindsey replaced Buckles on the mound and pitched the rest of the game.

The Brookhaven Americans added three more runs in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Newt Riley, an error and an RBI single by Nix.

Sub-district at Meadville

MEADVILLE &045; Franklin County was eliminated from the tournament after taking a 16-9 loss for the second straight night, this time to Magnolia on Friday night in a loser’s bracket game.

McComb handed Pine Hills its first loss in tournament play with a 25-0 win in the nightcap.
