NATCHEZ &045;&045; As of Friday, Adams County has yet another way to keep up with its 47 registered sex offenders.

Offenders in Mississippi will now have to not only register with the local sheriff, but with a driver’s license station where he or she will receive a card identifying them as a sex offender. The card will have to be reregistered every 90 days. The offender will pay a $5 fee for the registration.

Sheriff Ronny Brown said he thought the added requirement would assist in keeping up with the offenders.

&uot;It’s really a double checking procedure,&uot; Brown said. &uot;This will make it more local and it should help.&uot;

Offenders will still register with the sheriff where they will be fingerprinted, photographed and give a DNA sample.

Every 90 days the offenders receive a letter from the Department of Public Safety that they are required to sign and send back. If the letter is not returned local authorities check the sex offender’s house. If the person is not found a warrant for arrest is issued.

When an offender moves to a new location he must notify the DPS and the local sheriff 10 days before relocating.

Once registration with the sheriff’s office is complete it is submitted to the Mississippi Sex Offender Registry. Information is available to the public at www.sor.mdps.state.ms.us.

Now, offenders will be required to report to the driver’s license station for the 90-day reregistration and verification process or to report any change of address or status.

In Louisiana, offenders are also required to register with the sheriff of the parish. Sheriffs keep on file and forward to the Department of Public Safety, the offender’s address, conviction information, criminal history, photo and fingerprints.

Louisiana offenders do no have to register with a driver’s license office.

Concordia Parish has 34 registered sex offenders, according to the State Police Web site at, www.lasocpr.lsp.org/Static/Search.htm.
