Got water? Locals, evacuees hit markets

NATCHEZ &045; Though the Miss-Lou is playing host to more than 100 hurricane refugees, no one felt entirely safe Sunday afternoon.

Adams County residents and refugees headed to grocery stores, Wal-Mart and gas stations to stock up on necessities.

Terri Calhoun, of New Orleans, came to Natchez to ride out Hurricane Katrina at her mom’s house. &uot;We are trying to get prepared in case the hurricane hits here,&uot; she said. &uot;I’m getting canned goods, batteries and freezing water.&uot;

The battery hunt led Calhoun to Natchez Market after stocks sold out at K-Mart.

Natchez resident Carolyn Hutchins and family headed to the Market Sunday for bottled water and canned goods.

&uot;I’m getting anything that doesn’t have to be cooked,&uot; she said. &uot;In case the lights go out.&uot;

Angie Tyrone of Arabia, La., and friends planned ahead and booked five rooms at the Ramada Inn on Friday. Sunday’s news of a category 5 storm sent her to the store.

&uot;I’m getting desperation food,&uot; she said.

Other storm-related news

Natchez hotels were booked up as of 8 a.m. Saturday. Ramada front desk personnel said Sunday afternoon, some people were waiting in the hotel’s lobby until they could figure out where to go next.

Hotel personnel referred many people to the Red Cross shelter at Natchez High’s Steckler Building.
