FERRIDAY &045; Maybe Teriyoka Gullage’s teacher will cut her some slack on today’s spelling test.

After all, the second-grader spent most of her night sitting in the waiting room of Riverland Medical Center with the other riders of her school bus.

Students from all four Ferriday schools were on Bennie Quinn’s bus Thursday afternoon when another vehicle allegedly backed into it on Calhoun Road. The damage was minor and no children were hurt, Quinn said.

&uot;I was stopped, and children were unloading,&uot; Quinn said. &uot;He didn’t see me.&uot;

Quinn estimated damage to the front of his bus at a few hundred dollars.

Yet the precautionary hospital visit was enough to throw off the night’s routine for Gullage and the other children.

&uot;We’ve been waiting a while,&uot; mom Trenese Gullage said at 7:30 p.m. &uot;Supper’s not done. Baths aren’t done. There’s not much homework going on. We’ll be behind tonight getting to bed.&uot;

The accident happened around 3:45 p.m., Quinn estimated. Once the bus was hit Quinn called police who reported to the scene. The children waited in the bus for about 30 minutes while police checked the damage.

Quinn drove the children to the hospital on his bus where they met parents and district administrators.

Many of the children were still at the hospital until after 8 p.m.

&uot;The bus was stopped and the man went boom with the back of his car,&uot; seventh-grader Shanta Chest said.

Boom was the common word of description in the waiting room, but most children said they weren’t scared because they saw what happened.

Parents were notified by school personnel or word of mouth and most were at the hospital by 5 p.m.

Quinn has been driving a bus for 12 years and said this is the second time he’s been hit when the bus wasn’t moving.
