VIDALIA, La. &045; East Central’s Brett Hinson understood the situation.

Tied at 3 in the bottom of the seventh inning against Morehouse on Sunday night, Hinson stepped to the plate with teammate Tony Godbold at third base and one out.

Hinson needed to get Godbold home to prolong East Central’s season and advance in the Dixie Majors Northeast District Tournament.

&uot;I like situations like that &045; clutch situations,&uot; Hinson said. &uot;I really didn’t feel any pressure. I just had to put the ball in the outfield. I had a good feeling I was going to do it.&uot;

Call him clairvoyant.

Hinson hit a fly ball into right-centerfield, and Godbold beat Morehouse centerfielder Justin Campbell’s throw to the plate to lift East Central to a 4-3 victory Sunday night.

&uot;All I was thinking was, ‘Just get there. Don’t get out,’ &uot; Godbold said.

East Central advances to play Northeast, an 11-0 loser to Franklin on Sunday, in another elimination game at 7 tonight. Morehouse was eliminated with the loss.

Godbold, who earned the win for four innings of relief, started the East Central rally when he drew a walk from Morehouse reliever Daniel Echols to lead off the seventh.

After an out, Godbold stole second, and he moved to third when Huston Eliser reached on an error.

That brought Hinson to the plate.

Morehouse coach Chuck Echols called timeout and met with his infielders at the mound, while East Central coach Leo Eliser huddled with Hinson and the two baserunners along the third base line.

Leo Eliser had simple instructions for Hinson.

&uot;I just told him to get the ball out of the infield,&uot; Eliser said.

Hinson delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly, capping a tension-filled game that included several dazzling defensive plays.

The two teams played to a 3-all tie after three innings, and both teams preserved the tie with strong defense.

In the fifth, Morehouse’s T.J. Goleman drove a Godbold pitch off the base of the fence in left-center, but Hinson threw out Goleman as the tried to stretch a single into a double.

Then, with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, East Central’s C.J. Wright hit a towering fly ball to left-center. Almost everyone in the park thought it was a home run, but strong winds blowing in from left field kept it in the park.

Campbell made a diving catch near the fence to end the inning, as Wright simply shook his head in disgust.

&uot;All that did was kind of pump us up a little bit,&uot; Hinson said, &uot;but I think he’s still kind of made about it.&uot;

Jacob Bonnette gave up just two hits in the first three innings, but he was victimized by two errors. Campbell started for Morehouse, and he was also hurt by three errors.

&uot;We came out a little flat,&uot; Leo Eliser said. &uot;They were still thinking about yesterday’s game (a loss). It took us about three innings to get going. We settled down, and Bonnette and Tony pitched really well.&uot;

Goldbold entered the game in the fourth for East Central, and he allowed just three hits. Pressure mounted as Morehouse’s Goleman allowed no hits in three innings of relief before being replaced by Daniel Echols in the seventh.
