LIBERTY &045; The double-wing offense head coach Chad Harkins brought with him to Huntington is starting to pay dividends for the Hounds.
It’s also allowing several players in the backfield an opportunity to touch the ball a lot and make plays.
Three Huntington players had double-digit carries in its game against Amite School Center Friday night, led by Jody Cottongin, who accounted for the Hounds’ first 20 points as they rolled to a 35-6 win over the Rebels.
&uot;We played a little better than we did last week,&uot; Harkins said. &uot;Mistakes were cut down. We held on to the ball pretty well. We had problems with guys playing four quarters, but they weren’t wearing down until late in the third quarter.
Cottongin, who led Huntington’s balanced rushing attack with 119 yards rushing, scored on runs of 20 and 18 yards to give the Hounds a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
He then added an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown and scored on the two-point conversion as Huntington (2-0) took a commanding 20-0 halftime lead.
Huston Eliser, who had 81 yards rushing, scored on a 4-yard run, and Ricky Dunbar, who had 71 yards on the ground, added the two-point conversion.
The Hounds finished with 306 yards of total offense, the second straight week they have eclipsed the 300-yard mark.
Amite School Center (0-2) got its only points of the game later on in the third quarter on a 7-yard touchdown run by Casey Aldridge.
Tensas 21, Tri-County 0
FLORA &045; Despite having twice as many first downs as Tensas, as well as 60 more yards of total offense, the heavily-favored Tri-County Rebels (1-1) were done in by an astonishing seven forced fumbles by a tenacious Chiefs defense Friday night.
&uot;Both defense played great,&uot; Tensas head coach Chris Jacobs said. &uot;We weren’t able to capitalize on all of (their turnovers).&uot;
And this was a win Tensas needed a tough 14-13 loss to Silliman a week earlier.
Even though Tensas (1-1) had just over 100 yards of total offense, two of the turnovers the Chiefs forced set up the two fourth-quarter touchdowns that broke the game open.
Tensas’s second touchdown, a 1-yard run by Will Ratcliff, was set up by a fumble recovery inside the Tri-County 5-yard line after a bad snap on a punt attempt.
Later in the fourth quarter, Ryan Borsch intercepted a Benji Campbell pass that set up Cody Hill’s four-yard touchdown run.
WCCA 13, Centreville 7
WOODVILLE &045;&160;It was a much-needed win for WCCA.
In the third quarter on the with 10 minutes to go WCCA’s
Colin Dor threw a strike to wide receiver
T-Ray Deville for a 64-yard touchdown to give WCCA a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth, on a second and goal
play with 11:55 to go, Centerville’s Josh Lanehart gave a handoff to Johnathan Latham to score from 4 yards out
to give Centerville a 7-6 lead.
Later in the fourth with 10:16 remaining Dore’ threw another strike to his receiver T-Ray Deville, who ran the ball 41 yards to give WCCA the lead again.
