Marvin Gray grew up watching Jack Nicklaus play.

The Duncan Park golf course manager and professional golfer said Nicklaus, who played for the final time in the British Open Friday, was one of his heroes.

&uot;He’s a timeless competitor. He’s a gentleman and a fellow I respect and appreciate for all he’s done for the game,&uot; Gray said.

Nicklaus’ career, which began half a century ago, saw him win more majors than any other golfer in history.

Nicklaus also helped bring a new generation of golfers into the sport, much as Tiger Woods has done in the last decade.

&uot;He epitomizes the spirit of the game,&uot; Gray said. &uot;Him and Arnold Palmer, I think of those guys as the ambassadors of the golf.&uot;

Gray said Nicklaus’ greatest contribution was his will to win. &uot;His competition with some of the other great golfers was just phenomenal,&uot; Gray said. &uot;I think of him going up against Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, some of the top players.&uot;
