Rebels win nightcap, lose two to injuries

NATCHEZ &045; It wasn’t even a regular season game, and already Adams Christian put two players in the hospital Friday night.
What a way to start.
Somewhat lost in the Rebels’ two jamboree games Friday night were the injuries that left them depleted in the backfield. Brock Vines left for the hospital with what coaches thought was a concussion in the 12-7 loss to Brookhaven Academy, and Duncan Guedon suffered a knee injury in the 16-8 win over Huntington in the nightcap.
No one is expecting either to play Thursday when the Rebels play their first real game of the season. And Guedon may not play the entire season.
&uot;I don’t know what we’re going to have to do,&uot; Adams Christian head coach Bobby Marks said. &uot;We lost some starters, and I don’t know where to find one. Guedon was my backup at both halfbacks and almost as good as my starters. When somebody goes down, he was my first backup. If he’s through, that throws our defense and offense off.&uot;
The injuries put a damper on the evening for the Rebels, but they still played well at times on both sides of the ball against the Hounds to take the win. Huntington had success its first drive of the period but had a case of the yips on the next two possessions.
Two fumbles and a punt later, and they had nothing to show for the offense after driving 70 yards for a score on the opening possession.
&uot;It’s mistakes, and it’s conditioning,&uot; Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said. &uot;We’re not mentally ready. We need four quarters of football to play, and we need to get them out there next week for four quarters. We need to get it where we can get mentally focused and fight through the stuff that does on during the game.
&uot;I made a promise when I got here I would do whatever it takes to make us winners this year. I’m going to do that.&uot;
The Hounds did well at times against Adams Christian on defense, but it was a typical jamboree on both sides &045; good signs here, bad signs here and enough ups and downs for coaches on both sides to go over the basics this week heading into the start of the season.
Timmy Foster hit Cole Bradford on a 62-yard touchdown pass to break an 8-8 tie at the 3:47 mark in the period.
Foster hit Bradford on a 57-yard pass against Brookhaven that set up the team’s only score.
&uot;It’s just inconsistencies,&uot; Harkins said. &uot;There were good things happening out there, and I saw them. We’ve been burnt on the long pass in the scrimmage. It’s just one of those deals where I thought we contained them well at times. There were times you make two plays and look good, and then bam &045; they’re down field. We can win a lot of games if we can get that stuff ironed out.&uot;
The Rebels ran the ball well at times with David New, Lee Dellinger and anyone else available back there out of the T formation. Foster had some big carries on keepers, including an 18-yard run that turned into a 33-yard play when the Hounds were called for a personal foul.
Three plays later Bradford ran in from 15 yards out for a touchdown to tie the score at 8-8.
&uot;(Those two passes) were all we threw,&uot; Marks said. &uot;We’ve got some good pass plays, but we’re not going to use them until Thursday. We hope we can get through another week with a limited offense.&uot;
The Hounds had success on their first drive when they drove 70 yards for a score.
