MHSAA: Jefferson County beats Port Gibson; Hounds win

FAYETTE &045; In a battle of former Region 7-3A opponents, Anthony Williams and Jimmie Shorter each had over 100 yards rushing and Percy Turner threw three touchdown passes to lead the Tigers past the Blue Waves 28-8.

&uot;Our guys did good, but we’ve got things to work on,&uot; Tigers head coach Jeffrey Harness said.

Turner threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Kemp and two 6-yard touchdown passes to Christopher Williams. Turner added a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Jefferson County (2-0) pretty much had its way running the ball against Port Gibson (0-2). Anthony Williams led the Tigers’ ground game with 132 yard rushing and Shorter added 119 yards rushing.

&uot;We felt like we would run the ball well,&uot; Harness said. &uot;The offensive line did a good job. We need to work on the passing game. Too many turnovers in the air.&uot;

Turner threw three interceptions, but the defense kept the Blue Waves off the scoreboard until late in the game.

&uot;Overall, defensively we did a real good job,&uot; Harness said.

Port Gibson scored on a 35-yard pass from Denzel Martley to Karl Fleming with 30 second left in the game. Martley threw to Zachary Brown for the two-point conversion.
