Genealogy is like potato salad. When you share it with others, it’s a picnic!&uot; This quote headed the press release on the upcoming Genealogy Workshop at Mississippi State and suits the gathering perfectly.
MSU’s annual Genealogy Fair is always outstanding and this year’s event promises not to disappoint. It is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, and attendees will gather at Mississippi State University’s Mitchell Memorial Library for a full day of activities.
Sponsored by the Clay County Genealogical Society, the Oktibbeha County Historical and Genealogical Society, the Choctaw County Historical and Genealogical Society and the Mississippi State University Libraries, this year’s fair promises to educate and entertain seasoned researchers and novices alike.
Scheduled presenters and topics for the June event include: E.O. and Betty Templeton discussing publishing your family’s history; Dorothy Tennison examining using church records as resources; and Mary Helen Waggoner discussing pay databases including Ancestry.com.
Sessions will also be offered discussing genealogical society fundraising and solving brickwall problems. Finally a tour of genealogical resources located in Mitchell Memorial Library will be conducted. As an extra bonus, the Library’s Special Collections department will remain open after the Fair until 5 p.m. for researchers who may want to put to use what they have learned during the day’s presentations.
Cost for attendance for the Genealogy Fair is free, but the number allowed to attend will be limited to 100 participants.
Box lunches are available for the day, but must be reserved before June 8. To pre-register and reserve lunches, please visit www.library.msstate.edu/workshops/genealogy or call MSU Special Collections at 662-325-7679.
