NATCHEZ &045; Local and state authorities still don’t know where capital murder suspect Steven Kirkley is.

There was no evidence Wednesday that Kirkley was in Natchez, but there wasn’t any that he’s gone, Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

The last thing police know for sure is that Kirkley was on Homochitto Street early Tuesday morning.

NPD received a call Wednesday reporting a suspicious man near a house on Jefferson Street, but Mullins said the man may or may not have been Kirkley.

Investigators from Marion County, where Kirkley escaped from jail, are also tracing the case and will report to Mullins if Kirkley is spotted elsewhere.

Natchez Police are continuing sweeps of wooded areas and vacant buildings but haven’t found anything suspicious.

&uot;You can’t hide in areas like this for long,&uot; Mullins said. &uot;He needs to get food, either by buying it or stealing it.&uot;

Mullins said typically criminals trying to hide stay on vacant property but move frequently.

At one point Kirkley was suspected to be wearing a long-sleeved green camouflaged shirt. When he escaped from the Marion County jail on Sept. 5, he had a shaved head, but he probably has some hair by now, Mullins said.

He has three teardrops tattooed under his right eye and heavily tattooed arms.

Kirkley was in jail for the murder of Columbia realtor Janell Hatton last October. He has not yet gone to trial.

He reportedly broke into her house to steal a water jug, shot her, drove her to a rural area, suffocated her and buried her in a shallow grave. He has not yet gone to trial.

Anyone who thinks they see Kirkley should call police immediately. A reward is being offered for his capture.

Kirkley is 27 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 145 pounds. His body is heavily tattooed.

He has been featured on &uot;America’s Most Wanted.&uot;

His profile can be viewed on the site at www.americasmostwanted.com by searching under fugitives.

The Web site says he escaped from the Marion County jail by crawling through air vents.
