Missed opportunities doom Vikings

VIDALIA, La. &045; With the paint barely dry on the marquee, Dee Faircloth suggested a new name for Vidalia’s football stadium Friday night.
&8221;Maybe we should change it to Barney Fife Stadium,&8220; said Faircloth, just days after the school named the stadium in honor of the 38-year coaching veteran.
Faircloth conceded his team squandered plenty of opportunities in the homecoming loss, but one play typified the evening for Vidalia.
Trailing 21-6 late in the third quarter, Vidalia’s Aaron Keith broke through and blocked Adam Foret’s punt.
Instead of a Vidalia scooping up the ball and sprinting for a touchdown, Farmerville’s Meko Murphy grabbed the ball, broke a tackle and ran around right end for a 10-yard run and an apparent first down.
An illegal block during Murphy’s run nullified the play, and Foret then got off a 17-yard punt. Even though the sequence gave Vidalia favorable field position, the botched blocked punt proved to be a pivotal play in the first game at Dee Faircloth Stadium.
&8221;We were benevolent hosts,&8220; Faircloth said. &8221;Let’s mess up a blocked punt. Š We just didn’t complete the play.&8220;
Vidalia was without several key players, including senior fullback/middle linebacker Tony Godbold. Godbold suffered a broken leg last week against Jena and will likely miss the rest of the season.
Versatile running back/receiver Jordan Brewer also sat out with a leg injury, and Faircloth benched starters Josh Upchurch and Stephen Bryant during the game.
Even with all of that going against Faircloth and company, the Vikings had plenty of chances.
Vidalia ran 25 plays in the second half, and 14 of them &045; more than half &045; were inside the Farmerville 20 yardline. The Vikings got no points.
&8221;In the second half, Vidalia’s defense just got after us,&8220; Farmerville coach Pat Murphy said. &8221;If our defense hadn’t come up with some big stops, they would have beat us.&8220;
Vidalia took the second-half kickoff and needed just five plays to get to the Farmerville 9 yardline. Chevese Cleveland and Quin Jiles pressured Vidalia quarterback Brandon Hawkins into an incompletion on fourth down.
Then, after the Farmers went three-and-out, Vidalia drove inside the 20 again, only to have Hawkins’ fourth-down throw intercepted in the end zone by Montae Johnson.
The Vikings final two drives ended at the Farmerville 13 and 16, respectively.
Vidalia ran only one play from its own territory in the second half, yet the Vikings scored no points.
&8221;That was a poor job on my part in getting them ready,&8220; Faircloth said. &8221;That’s what I told the kids: This is on me. I didn’t do a good job. Hopefully, I’ll do better.&8220;
Farmerville staked itself to a 21-6 halftime lead by scoring on their final three drives of the first half, including two touchdowns in the final 2:16 before halftime.
Quarterback A.J. Woods scored on a 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, capping a five-play, 37-yard drive. The drive was set up when Jiles blocked a Vidalia punt.
Vidalia replied with a seven-play, 66-yard drive, and Lance Moore caught a 25-yard touchdown from Hawkins.
The two-point run failed, and Vidalia trailed 7-6 with 6:52 to play before halftime.
Farmerville answered with a methodical nine-play, 73-yard drive.
Woods scored on a 4-yard run with 2:16 to go in the half.
Vidalia went three-and-out, and the Farmers then went to the shotgun formation for their two-minute offense.
Four plays later, Woods scrambled for a 13-yard gain and stepped out of bounds at the Vidalia 31 with just 0.5 seconds on the clock.
Woods ended the half with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cleveland, who made a leaping catch in the front right corner of the end zone for a touchdown and a 21-6 halftime lead.
&8221;We let them catch a pass when everybody knows they’re going to throw in the end zone,&8220; Faircloth said.
The loss spoiled a strong outing by Vidalia’s Demack Bates, who finished with 166 yards on 26 carries.
Woods led Farmerville with 131 yards on 14 carries, while fullback Remi Ward added 120 yards on 15 carries.
