LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. &045; In a tough, defensive game between two teams involved in a tight race near the top of District 7-A, Briarfield scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to rally for a 22-15 win over Huntington Friday night.

It was only the second home game of the season for the Rebels (5-2, 3-1) and the first since a hard-fought 20-14 win over Tensas on Sept. 9.

Briarfield’s Sam Minske returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and Joseph Hopkins’ two-point conversion run gave the Rebels a quick 8-0 lead.

But Huntington (4-2, 2-1) answered later in the first quarter when Jody Cottongin scored on a 1-yard run. Huston Eliser ran in for the two-point conversion for an 8-8 score.

The Hounds took the lead on a 2-yard run by Ricky Dunbar and Trey Brasher’s extra point gave them a 15-8 lead at halftime.

But just when Huntington thought it had the momentum going its way as the second half started, Briarfield took it away in the third quarter.

Steven Landreneau scored on a 60-yard touchdown run and Hall Schneider added a 6-yard scoring run.

The Rebels’ defense did the rest, keeping the Hounds off the scoreboard in the second half while intercepting two passes.

ST. JOSEPH, La. &045; Mike McWilliams and Will Ratcliff each rushed for over 100 yards for the Chiefs (2-4, 1-2), but against the No. 2 ranked team in Class A and the top team in District 7-A, it was not nearly enough.

Sam Herman had two touchdown runs and returned an interception for a short touchdown while Black Brown had two long touchdown runs to lead the Mustangs (6-0, 3-0), which had nearly 400 yards of total offense.

WCCA 28, Prentiss Christian 6

WOODVILLE &045; The Rams took a big step in claiming the top spot in District 6-A thanks to a solid effort against the Saints.

The Saints got the first score of the game, but the Rams responded with four touchdowns to seal it. Chris Gann scored on the first play of a drive in the first quarter with a 57-yard yard run for a 7-6 lead at the 3:16 mark.

The Rams had the ball in the second quarter on their own 23, but a big 15-yard penalty later on Prentiss set up Sean Venezia’s 54-yard run for a score. Gann added another score in the third quarter on a 3-yard run following Venezia’s 22-yard gain.

Venezia finished with 200 yards on 16 carries. Robby Arnold had 12 tackles and five sacks on defense.

The Rams travel to Adams Christian next week.
