NATCHEZ &045; Kenny Robinson Jr. walks the halls at Natchez High School like every eye is on him.
It’s a lot of pressure, but it helps him remember to set a good example, and it’s a role his peers elected him to hold when they voted him Mr. NHS in August.
&8221;I try to show leadership all the time,&8220; he said. &8221;To be a good role model.&8220;
Robinson and Miss NHS Alyssa Brown, childhood friends, won more than a popularity title &045; they won responsibility.
&8221;I have to be at certain functions,&8220; he said. &8221;And there’s a lot I’ve got to agree with that may be things I don’t agree with.&8220;
In between classes and after school, Robinson said he makes a point of speaking to everyone, even the students younger than him.
&8221;Freshmen are looking for someone that isn’t going to think they are too much, someone that can stop and talk to them,&8220; he said. &8221;I make sure I do that.&8220;
As one of two band drum majors, Robinson spends much of his time in the practice room or on the field. During games he directs the band and plays a trumpet solo.
&8221;I learned to play the trumpet in the fifth-grade,&8220; he said. &8221;When I was little I used to go to college football games and I saw the drum majors.&8220;
And it’s the leadership role he likes now.
&8221;I get to help everybody out,&8220; he said.
Robinson has a 3.3 GPA, even though there’s not all that much study time between band, varsity basketball, National Honor Society, student council and church.
&8221;It’s hard, but I just fit in what I can fit in,&8220; he said.
The tentative plan for next year is to attend Texas Southern University, where he hopes to be in the band. He hasn’t picked a major yet though, but English is his favorite subject in school.
He is the son of Kenny Robinson Sr. and LaJune and the grandson of Mary Ann Holmes.
