FRANKLINTON, La. &045; For the second straight week, the Trinity Saints needed a win on the road to stay in contention for second place in District 4-AA.
Led by Stevan Ridley, Tripp Bryant and Clint Easom on offense and a defense that held almost all of Bowling Green’s offense in check, the Saints got a stunning 26-14 win over the Buccaneers Friday night.
&8221;Just a huge upset. Just a great team we beat,&8220; Saints head coach David King said. &8221;All the things going against us. They had 50 players dressed out and we had 16.&8220;
With the win, Trinity improved to 6-2 overall and, more importantly, 3-1 in District 4-AA with a showdown with Brookhaven Academy at home next Friday night that will determine the No. 2 spot in the district.
&8221;We accomplished our first goal, which is a winning season,&8220; King said. &8221;To be at this point tells you how hard they’ve worked to get to this point.&8220;
And as King pointed out, the team’s second goal is making the playoffs.
Ridley accounted for 302 of the team’s 364 total offensive yards &045; 258 yards rushing on 46 carries and 44 yards passing &045; and accounted for all four of Trinity’s touchdowns.
Ridley had a 3-yard scoring run and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Easom as the Saints scored twice in 45 seconds midway through the first quarter for an early 12-0 lead.
Bowling Green (4-3, 3-2) got back in the game with 5:53 to go in the first quarter on an 80-yard touchdown run by Justin Jones, who was pretty much all of the Buccaneers’ offense, to cut the margin to 12-7.
&8221;The intensity on our first drive (55 yards)&8220; was the key to the team’s win, King said. &8221;We drove down the field. We put in a few new plays that they didn’t scout. We were mixing up the box with a couple of reverses.&8220;
The Saints then increased its lead to 20-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run and Parker Brumfield’s two-point conversion pass to Bryant early in the second quarter.
Jones tried to keep the Buccaneers in the game as his 71-yard scoring run cut Trinity’s lead to 20-14.
Ridley put the game away for the Saints with a 39-yard touchdown run with just over 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

LIBERTY &045; After a somewhat lackluster first quarter, the Rams pulled away to defeat the Rebels to claim their second straight District 6-A championship.
Chris Gann and Sean Venezia led the Rams (4-4, 3-0) on offense and defense. Gann had 215 yards rushing, three touchdowns, an interception he returned for 30 yards, two fumble recoveries and seven tackles. Venezia had 150 yards rushing, two touchdowns and led the defense in tackles with nine.
Amite School Center (1-7, 1-2) was held to just 94 yards of total offense. The Rebels’ only score was a 15-yard touchdown pass on a screen pass from Lee Turner to Casey Aldridge.
