NATCHEZ &8212; After a tough loss Friday night to St. Aloysius, this game couldn&8217;t have come at a better time for Cathedral.
The Green Wave beat Crystal Springs 9-0 Saturday at a tournament hosted by Natchez High, winning easily in a game in which the Tigers had few scoring opportunities.
&8220;It&8217;s early in the season and we&8217;re still finding ourselves,&8221; Cathedral head coach Rick Freeman said. &8220;We had a hard game last night, so this kind of makes up for that, I guess.&8221;
Cathedral opened the scoring with 37:46 to go in the first half when Kris Griffiths scored off of Eric Hollowell&8217;s corner kick. Scott Pollard slotted home a pass from Hunter Foster on a breakaway for Cathedral&8217;s second score.
Foster scored off an Andy Taunton pass to put the Green Wave up 3-0.
An own goal by Crystal Springs made it a 4-0 game early in the second half before Taunton scored on a Robert Mahoney cross the Crystal Springs keeper had knocked down.
Mahoney scored a few minutes later on a strong shot from the left side. Foster assisted Jesse Morrison on a goal from five yards out and then connected with Morrison again for a goal that made it 8-0 Cathedral. Morrison played the first half and part of the second in goal for the Green Wave before moving to the field.
Morrison returned the favor with 9:24 left when he passed the ball to Foster for the game&8217;s final score.
Foster, an eighth-grader, was a revelation for the Green Wave, as he scored two goals and had two assists playing the entire game at forward.
&8220;We got to play a lot of players today,&8221; Freeman said. &8220;It&8217;s nice to have an eighth-grader come in and play like that and score a couple goals and get some assists.&8221;
For Crystal Springs, the game was a learning experience. With most of the Tigers playing in their first or second year of playing soccer, they need all the game play they can get, Crystal Springs coach Chad Poole said.
&8220;This gets us experience and we have some fun,&8221; Poole said. &8220;This is the first year for a lot of these guys, so we&8217;ll get better.&8221;
