Jury hopes to pass budget

Vidalia &8212; The biggest change in the proposed 2005 Concordia Parish Police Jury budget is a fairly obvious one.
While there is little change in the general fund budget jurors are expected to pass Monday, they have a new fund to accept &8212; the proposed budget for the road sales tax fund.
Thanks to a tax passed earlier this fall by parish voters, police jurors have extra money to pay for road improvements and a few other expenditures in the new year.
Police Jury Secretary Russell Wagoner said the proposed road tax fund revenue is $1.025 million for 2006. In his first time to budget for the new tax, Wagoner did not plan for an ending fund balance, but he expects some money to be left over at the end of the year.
&8220;There may be $10,000 to $50,000, or there may be more than that,&8221; he said.
In October, voters in the parish passed a 1.5-cent sales tax increase dedicated to road improvements. Jurors have a list of 82 parish roads prioritized based on needs.
The revenue from the road tax will also help pay for some public works projects in the towns of Clayton and Ridgecrest, as well as a $10,000 payment to the Council on Aging.
Other than the addition of the road tax fund, &8220;there&8217;s not a lot of change&8221; in the budget, Wagoner said.
Wagoner said he does not try to make too much allowance for increases in such items as gasoline, noting that if increases are needed the jury can approve revisions to the budget later in the year.
In addition to approving the proposed budget for 2006, jurors on Monday will also be asked to approve a revised budget for 2005.
Wagoner said both budgets could see some changes in coming days as the parish nears the end of the fiscal year.
