Session on condos today

NATCHEZ &8212; Those working on a revised design for proposed blufftop condos will meet today with Historic Preservation Commission members to show what plans they&8217;ve come up with so far.
The work session will be held at 3 p.m. at the Historic Natchez Foundation building on Commerce Street.
&8220;It&8217;s just a concept review &8230; to see about the progress that&8217;s been made&8221; on the revised plans, said commission Chairwoman Marty Seibert.
Developers Ed Worley and Larry L. Brown Jr. aren&8217;t on the commission&8217;s agenda for approval Wednesday.
But both City Planner Andrew Smith and Seibert noted any applicants can attend the meetings and be heard by the commission.
Preservationists and locals have said the condo development Worley and Brown proposed for the site, as previously drawn, did not fit in with the character of the surrounding buildings and wasn&8217;t in keeping with Natchez&8217;s preservation ordinance or design guidelines.
City officials have said that such a development is needed to help boost Natchez&8217;s struggling economy and act as a catalyst for further development along the riverfront.
The commission had put off acting on the Worley-Brown request since a September meeting to give the developers more time to work out, with architects hired by the Historic Natchez Foundation, design changes that would help the complex fit the city&8217;s preservation rules.
Such design meetings were held in early November. Among the plan changes that resulted:
4The condos, originally two buildings seven stories high, were split into five buildings six stories high, a total of 64 units.
4The buildings would be detailed with dormers, ironwork and many other details inspired from Natchez architecture.
4The buildings would also now face the city along with the river, and the complex would include a 15-foot landscaped river walk with benches. The walk would be open to the public.
