Morgantown students get shopping spree

NATCHEZ &8212; Jimmy and Simonisa made the perfect shopping duo.
Simonisa picked out a pair of dark jeans for Jimmy. Jimmy approved of the pale blue shirt when Simonisa had an all too frequent bout of indecisiveness.
The fifth- and sixth-grader, respectively, aren&8217;t close friends. The only thing they really have in common is their school, Morgantown Elementary.
But they made the most of a pretty big early Christmas present Thursday.
Morgantown loaded 22 students on the bus for a $50, tax exempt, shopping spree for each child at Wal-Mart.
Some of the students were evacuees from hurricane ravaged areas, others locals who are financially needy.
The bulk of the money came from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., which adopted Morgantown after the hurricane. Local Partners in Education also donated and volunteered for the event.
Students went in randomly assigned pairs with an adult and spent close to two hours in the store. Clothes came first, uniform pants, shirts, then casual clothes of their choice. Any left over money went to toys, jewelry and beauty products.
Jimmy was thrifty, getting six toys on top of two sets of clothes. Simonisa had her heart set on an electronic recording device that ended up being more than $100. She settled for the beauty products aisle and bought gifts for her family and friends.
Most children took their time, often making a final decision and then changing their minds again.
&8220;It&8217;s so hard shopping,&8221; New Orleans native Joshua Lindsey said in frustration as he walked past racks of jeans.
The school is also distributing $25 gift cards from Fred&8217;s to students who qualify, and others have been signed up to shop with a police officer over the Christmas break through the Santa Cop program.
