INDIANAPOLIS – Tamika Catchings had 22 points and 13 rebounds to help the Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 75-74 Wednesday and win their sixth-straight game.
Catchings also had six assists for the Fever (16-4), who have the best 20-game start in Eastern Conference history.
Tammy Sutton-Brown added 12 points and six rebounds for the Fever.
Reserve guard Jia Perkins scored 24 points for Chicago and Candice Dupree added 12 points for the Sky, who lost their fifth straight.
Chicago had the ball with eight seconds left and Indiana leading 75-74. The Sky’s Dominique Canty got tied up, and Indiana’s Tully Bevilaqua got the steal. Catchings ended up with the ball and threw it down the court as time expired.
Dupree, an All-Star and Chicago’s leading scorer, fouled out with 12 seconds left and was unavailable for the final play.
The Fever could have put the game away, but they missed all four of their free-throw attempts in the final 12 seconds.
The crowd of 10,542 was Indiana’s largest home crowd in nearly four years. Indiana hosts Detroit on Friday night in a matchup of teams with the two best records in the league.
Indiana fell behind 16-7 in the first quarter before Tamika Whitmore got a technical foul for arguing with an official. The Fever outscored the Sky 13-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 20-19 lead.
Perkins made a jumper with two seconds left in the first half to give Chicago a 39-38 lead.
Indiana led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but Chicago came back to tie the score at 55 on a shot by Armintie Price with 21 seconds left in the period. Catchings made two free throws with three seconds left in the quarter to give the Fever a 57-55 lead heading into the final period.
