MONROE, La. &8212; Coming off another tournament championship, the Ferriday Trojans knew they would have their hands full against one of the best teams in Class C in Excelsior Christian Monday night.

Granted, most times a game between a Class 2A team and a Class C team would be considered a mismatch, but not this one. Ferriday went in to this game at 11-1 and the Jaguars sported a solid 16-2 record.

And had it not been for a third quarter that turned out to be bad for Ferriday and good for Excelsior Christian, the game would have been a lot closer. Instead, the Jaguars ended up with a stunning 67-47 win over the Trojans.

&8220;I thought the first half we came out in a zone. We were in a zone,&8221; Trojans head coach James Davis said. &8220;But right at the end of the second quarter we had three or four crucial turnovers.&8221;

Ferriday (11-2) led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, but the turnovers near the end of the first half allowed Excelsior Christian to take a 25-22 halftime lead. What followed was the game-changing third quarter.

&8220;We didn&8217;t even play the third quarter,&8221; said Davis. And that pretty much summed it up. The Jaguars outscored the Trojans an astonishing 21-4 to take a 20-point lead into the third quarter.

The Trojans had no answer for the Jaguars&8217; Lace Dunn, who led all scorers with 35 points. Josh Cherry, Davarius Dunn and Marcus Herring had 10 points each.

&8220;We just didn&8217;t do the things in order to compete, Davis said. &8220;Lace Dunn pretty much carried their team. We just couldn&8217;t contain him. We missed too many lay-ups.&8221;

Give credit to Ferriday for not giving up in the fourth quarter when things looked bleak. The Trojans cut the Jaguars&8217; lead to 13 points and could have cut the lead even further.

But once again, a couple of untimely turnovers put an end to the rally and the Jaguars increased their lead back to 20.

&8220;You&8217;ve got to have your &8216;A&8217; game against a good team, and unfortunately we didn&8217;t have it tonight,&8221; Davis said. &8220;I was proud of the way my kids continued to play. They played hard. They didn&8217;t give up.&8221;

Eric Crump led Ferriday with 16 points and Charles Jefferson chipped in with 13 points.

Tensas 47, Adams Christian 36

ST. JOSEPH, La. &8212; The fourth quarter of this game seemed to define two teams going in opposite directions.

Adams Christian led Tensas 34-29 after three quarters of play, but the Chiefs&8217; defense steeped up in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Rebels 18-2 to rally for the win.

The game was close in the first quarter, with Tensas (6-6) taking a 10-9 lead. But ACCS (3-11) outscored the Chiefs 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 24-16 lead at halftime.

No one scored in double figures for Tensas, which was led by Zach Jones with nine points. Timmy Foster led ACCS with 12 points.
