Game on, after all

You know the teams. You know the players. You know which team does what better.

And that&8217;s where things get interesting.

What will it come down to today in the girls&8217; matchup of Trinity Episcopal and Adams Christian? Trinity&8217;s outside game with Mallory Archer and Eliza Jones? AC&8217;s inside game with Mattie Geoghegan and Ariana DeLaSalle?

Or does it matter that much in a rivalry game like this, the crosstown showdown that wouldn&8217;t have happened had the South State bracket not mandated it?

And here&8217;s another thing you should know &8212; there might be some jitters early, but both team will leave it all on the floor by the time the final horn sounds.

Tipoff is at 1 p.m. at Columbia Academy.

&8220;Every day in practice I think about this one game,&8221; DeLaSalle said. &8220;This is the one game I&8217;ve been looking forward to the whole year. It&8217;s just a big rivalry, and I&8217;m happy we&8217;re able to play it.

&8220;They don&8217;t have much of an inside game, so we have that advantage. But they&8217;ve got a lot of good shooters. Everybody is coming to the game. Columbia will not be happy with all the people in their gym.&8221;

So it&8217;s matchups. It&8217;s who&8217;s going to do the best job of doing what they do best, who doesn&8217;t get into foul trouble and who plays the best defense against the other team&8217;s strength.

This isn&8217;t just a mere addition to the series. Of any sport so far since the two schools began playing three seasons ago, today&8217;s matchup may be the most evenly matched.

&8220;I just feel like it&8217;s going to be a good game,&8221; Trinity head coach Melanie Hall said. &8220;Both teams are going to be real hungry. (Adams) is big, strong and athletic. They&8217;re in a lot of ways similar to (Columbia) with their guard play and inside game. AC may not be be there height-wise, but they may be stronger.&8221;

There may be an element of unknowns or second- and third-hand scouting reports since the two teams haven&8217;t played and competed in separate district this season. But most everyone from both teams are back from last season &8212; both feature depend on a mix of juniors and seniors &8212; after Adams took two of three from Trinity last season.

Both will do what they did last year, but now they&8217;re just much better at it and much more knowledgeable.

&8220;I think both teams are playing close to their potential, and this time of year is when you really want it to happen,&8221; Adams head coach John R. Gray said. &8220;That&8217;s the thing about Trinity &8212; Archer is not really their best player every night. You have to watch (Molly) Butts and Eliza (Jones). It depends on how well we defend and how well we play offensively.&8221;

So if you want to talk matchups, you&8217;ve got to talk under the basket. High-percentage shots. It&8217;s Geoghegan and DeLaSalle muscling for shots underneath, and they&8217;re doing it so well right now.

Geoghegan had 10 points &8212; all in the second half &8212; Saturday against Prairie View after putting up 14 against Copiah the night prior.

&8220;We&8217;ve just stepped up lately more,&8221; Geoghegan said. &8220;Hopefully we&8217;ll keep that up. (The guards) have been much better with not forcing it. For a while we didn&8217;t know when to go in and when not to. Now we know when is the opportune time.&8221;

It&8217;s been all zone defenses Geoghegan and the Lady Rebels have matched up against this season, and that may very well be what Trinity gives them today. But the Lady Saints have matched up well down low at times with people &8212; that first win over Columbia &8212; and are firm believers in a strong man-to-man defense.

Courtney Timm and Laura Jo Hurt may get the defensive assignments down low.

&8220;In the post they&8217;re a lot like Columbia,&8221; Trinity senior Jessica Marchbanks said. &8220;They just rebounded real hard (against Brookhaven) and were patient. They worked well as a team. We&8217;re mainly a defensive team. And it&8217;s more of a team thing &8212; it&8217;s a friendship thing. I think that&8217;s why our team does so well.&8221;

On the other end, the Lady Rebels&8217; biggest concern is Trinity&8217;s outside shooting. If Archer and Jones get out from the outside, that could put them in trouble. One key matchup may be how well the two and point guard Butts handle the ball pressure from Brittany Gamberi.

Outside of that, it&8217;s going to be who wants the game most, who gets over the jitters early, and who gets the breaks every now and then.

Hall, too, has told her players it&8217;s so, so simple.

&8220;I&8217;ve got the best assistants in the world with Howard (Jones) and Lacy Johnson,&8221; Hall said. &8220;When she says something the kids really listen. She said it&8217;s fundamental &8212; you&8217;ve got to have fun, and you&8217;ve got to bring your mental game. If they play hard and play smart, they&8217;re going to have fun. If we do that, I know I&8217;m going to have a good time.&8221;
