LORMAN &8212; Alcorn State coach Shirley Walker pulled everything out of her motivational bag of tricks on Monday night &8212; yelling, encouraging, cajoling and even ridiculing her players.

Something worked.

Walker walked off the floor with a smile on her face after Alcorn earned a 64-45 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Whitney Complex.

The victory solidified Alcorn&8217;s quest for a berth in the SWAC Tournament, and it also avenged a disappointing loss to UAPB last month.

&8220;Coach Walker told us that it&8217;s time for us to do it,&8221; forward Rasaan Powell said. &8220;I&8217;m going to be doubleteamed, so everybody else should have a field day. That&8217;s what happened tonight.&8221;

Powell led Alcorn with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Ten other Alcorn players scored, led by Latoya Wily&8217;s 12 points. Tanika Nunez added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Ebony Franklin also had six points, while Tina Huff added two points, three assists, four rebounds and three blocks.

&8220;When your number is called off the bench, you have to be able to produce,&8221; Huff said. &8220;We know Rasaan can&8217;t score 40 points every game.&8221;

Alcorn took control with an 11-2 run in the first half, building a 27-15 lead before carrying a 37-21 lead into the locker room at the half.

UAPB (6-16, 5-8) tried to shoot its way back into the game, but the Lionettes hit just 4-of-19 from 3-point range in the second half.

Alcorn&8217;s defense held off the Lionettes, thanks to a dominating 48-24 rebounding advantage.

&8220;They beat us by 10 at their house, and we said this was time for payback,&8221; Huff said. &8220;By winning tonight by 19, I think we got that.&8221;

UAPB shot just 24.6 percent for the game (15-of-61), while also making just 10-of-19 at the free throw line.

Alcorn &8212; for the first time in more than six weeks &8212; shot the ball at the line. Powell went 10-for-12 at the line, and Alcorn hit 22-of-28 as a team.

Alcorn also outrebounded UAPB 48-24.

&8220;We&8217;re still fighting to get into the tournament. I guess we realized we don&8217;t want to be the last seed,&8221; Powell said.
