No coin flip necessary in ACCS road trip call

Some quick thinking saved everyone from making two road trips for the Class AA state championship series.

MPSA officials went ahead and flipped a coin to see who would be the home team if Adams Christian and Simpson Academy would meet up in the championship since both teams won their districts. Simpson &045; just like in last year&8217;s series &045; won the toss and the right to host games 1 and 3.

Officials at both schools reminded everyone that since the two schools were meeting in consecutive years, there was no need to flip a coin. Since Simpson hosted games 1 and 3 last season, the Rebels will do so this season.

Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Game 2 is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, and the if-necessary game will be at 6 p.m. Thursday.

&8220;They forgot,&8221; Adams head coach Ron Rushing said. &8220;I don&8217;t know if it&8217;s a written rule, but if you play in back-to-back years you can&8217;t flip a coin twice. I called Mr. (Les) Triplett, and he confirmed it was right. The Simpson coach knew that.&8221;

The schedule, meanwhile, will be different. Rushing said he didn&8217;t want to play on Monday to give his team a breather following its dramatic series win over Brookhaven Academy, and Simpson Academy couldn&8217;t play Friday due to graduation.

The series instead will go three straight days. The Cougars, coached by former Mize head coach Winston Mullins, will likely go with Ben Maddox to start against Timmy Foster in the opener.

How much either starter would have left if the series goes to a third game remains to be seen.

&8220;We&8217;ll have three days rest, and our arms should be refreshed a little bit,&8221; Rushing said. &8220;At this point, I don&8217;t know. You&8217;ve got to play it by ear. They&8217;re one of the best programs in the state. They&8217;ve won it the last two years. It should be a great series.&8221;
