Vidalia &8212; Eight pounds and 10 ounces turned 5-year-old Devin Ainsworth into a teacher, role model and big brother in a matter of hours.
May 15, Todd and Kim Ainsworth brought Maddux Ainsworth into the world, all the while knowing Devin&8217;s predictions.
&8220;I knew he was going to be a boy,&8221; Devin said looking at the new family addition. &8220;I just love him. I am going to teach him to not cry.&8221;
Maddux, who has been passed around and kissed since his arrival, is making the adjustment quite fine into his new home, Kim said.
&8220;The nurse let Devin carry Maddux to me in the hospital,&8221; she said. &8220;Devin is having to adjust because he has been the only one for five years, but he smiles the whole time he holds Maddux.&8221;
Devin has been helping around the house and with the new load of responsibilities since his brother&8217;s arrival and couldn&8217;t wait for his brother to get here, Kim said.
&8220;Devin would come in and kiss my belly every day and ask when the baby was going to get here,&8221; she said. &8220;I told him when my belly gets big. So when I started showing, you can imagine how it was.&8221;
Maddux&8217;s father, Todd, a deputy sheriff at Concordia Parish Sheriff&8217;s Department, said the arrival of his son has been wonderful.
&8220;Devin always said he was going to teach his new brother how to fight, but thank goodness he hasn&8217;t,&8221; Todd said. &8220;We wanted a girl, but Devin told us the whole time it was going to be a boy. We didn&8217;t even have a boys name picked out, but we couldn&8217;t be happier.&8221;
Maddux received his name Wednesday after an unexpected, but welcomed by all, showing at the hospital.
&8220;You don&8217;t think you will ever love them as much as your own, but you sure do,&8221; said Devin and Maddux&8217;s grandmother, Sylvia Martin. &8220;That&8217;s the beauty of being a grandparent.&8221;
Todd, able to get two weeks off from work, has been a key factor in smoothing the transition process for everyone, Martin said.
&8220;He&8217;s really just the best little daddy,&8221; Martin said. &8220;They have both tried to make Devin be a part of everything. He has been there through the whole process.&8221;
Todd has been helping around the house with the daily chores while adjusting to the new way of life for the family of four.
&8220;The biggest adjustment has been splitting time between the two of them,&8221; Todd said. &8220;I just have to make sure I&8217;m not spending more time with either one right now.&8221;
The Calvary Baptist Sunday school class in Vidalia has been helping also by bringing Sunday supper to the family.
&8220;All the nurses and the people at the church have been so good to us,&8221; Kim said. &8220;It&8217;s been so long since we had a little one like this and it&8217;s just been wonderful. I guess I forgot how much you love them.&8221;
