Deer park &8212; After 10 days filled with various search and rescue efforts, the body of Jeffery D. Hauer was found Friday morning.
Fishermen found Hauer&8217;s body in Old River around 6 a.m., approximately two miles down river from where he was last seen, authorities said. The fisherman immediately notified authorities who in turn told the family.
&8220;I would just like to thank everybody for everything,&8221; Hauer&8217;s cousin Larry Hauer said. &8220;We are thankful for everyone who stood with us on the banks, and may God be with everyone that helped. This really helps in bringing some closure.&8221;
Hauer, 35, of Natchez was last seen by residents of Deer Park in Old River yelling for help. Neighbors of the boat ramp he was last seen by arrived moments after he disappeared, unable to offer help or reasoning. The Concordia Parish Sheriff&8217;s Department received the call reporting the incident at 2:15 p.m. May 30.
Efforts to find Hauer&8217;s missing body including dragging Old River, using cadaver dogs, helicopter searches and experienced diving efforts by brother Travis Bacon, revealed nothing. Members of Concordia Parish and Adams County Sheriff&8217;s Office, members of Louisiana and Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries Departments and Deer Park volunteers joined the effort.
&8220;Along with expressing my deepest sympathy to Mr. Hauer&8217;s family following this tragedy, I want to thank all those who have worked so hard to help find him,&8221; Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell said.
Hauer was an avid fisherman and spent hours on the water, his family said. He worked in security in Texas before moving to Louisiana to work at the state prison in Angola. He attended Alcorn State University and later worked for the Natchez Police Department.
He worked as a Fayette police officer, spent time in Iraq and worked as a Tensas Parish corrections officer.
Concordia Parish Coroner Sarah Lee has ordered an autopsy.
