Jeffery Dewayne &8220;Jeff&8221; Hauer

March 12, 1971 &8212; May 30, 2006 NATCHEZ &8212; Services for Jeffery Dewayne &8220;Jeff&8221; Hauer, 35, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, in Old River at Deer Park, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Kenneth E. Stanton Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Webb Funeral Home. Viewing of pictures will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Hauer was born March 12, 1972 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Jeanette Hauer and Alvin L. Bacon. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Johnny Hauer and Clint Miller Sr.; and grandmother, Laura Hauer. Survivors include his mother, Jeanette King and husband Eddie; father, Alvin Bacon and wife Brenda, all of Natchez; sons, Jeffery Ferguson of Woodville, Johnathan, Joshua, Jordan and Jomar Hauer, all of Belzoni; daughters, Melanie Hauer of Arlington, Texas, Breanna Stumps of Natchez, and Isabella Pores of the Philippines; brothers, Stephen Harding and wife Debbie of San Angelo, Texas, Alvin Travis Bacon and wife Rachel of Kuwait, Trymone Williams of Jackson, Tony Hunt, Edward King, and Joel Bacon, all of Natchez; sisters, Melanie Bacon of Arlington, Texas, Yolande Myles, Catina Hauer and Elizabeth Bacon, all of Natchez; grandmothers, Camille Wesley and Stella Miller, both of Natchez; special cousins, Christopher Hauer, Larry D. Hauer, Robert Hauer Jr. and Calvin Riley; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ruth Slatter Backus

SARASOTA, Fla. &8212; A memorial service for Ruth Slatter Backus, 80, who died of cancer June 6, 2006, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, will be held at 3 p.m. June 17 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Saraota. She was a retired treasurer for several non-profit associations, and a life long artist. She was a resident of Sarasota since moving from Arlington, Va., in 1988. Mrs. Backus was born in Buffalo, New York and moved with her family to Natchez in 1939. Her father, the late A.J. &8220;Bert&8221; Slatter was one of the early general managers of Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company which opened in 1939. Mrs. Backus lived in Natchez for several years and graduated from Natchez High in 1944. She attended LSU, Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Denver, where she met her first husband, Joseph W. Gerard. She majored in art with a minor in business. After living in New York for several years she moved back to Natchez in 1958 where she lived until 1966. She then moved to Arlington, Va., where she married her second husband, Gordon Backus. Mrs. Backus was quite an accomplished and prolific artist. Her specialty was in watercolor. She was an active member of the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society and four other artist groups. She was a good friend to many, an expert bridge player and a competitive tennis player in high school. She was preceded in death by her father, A.J. Slatter and mother, Dorothy Baylis Slatter. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Bob Matthews; her son, Jack Gerard, all of Washington D.C. area; two brothers, John Slatter of Essex Junction, Vermont and Bill Slatter of Natchez; two grandchildren, Nathan and Bobby Matthews and one great grandchild, Dylan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.

Mrs. Ray Alla Fugler

Aug. 22, 1914 &8212; June 11, 2006 NATCHEZ &8212; Funeral services for Mrs. Ray Alla Fugler, 91, of Vidalia, who died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ferriday, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Clyde Ray Webber officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Young&8217;s Funeral Home Ferriday. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Fugler was born August 22, 1914 in Stanley, La. She moved in with her daughter, Patsy, and granddaughter, Kelly Ray Clary &8220;Sidekick.&8221; She was a resident of Vidalia and a member of the First Baptist Church Of Ferriday. Mrs. Fugler was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Fugler; father, Charlie Jones; mother, Beaulah Jones; stepmother, Josie Jones; son, Charles Fugler; sisters, Johnnie Mae Jones and Eva Lois Fargo; grandchildren, Casey Clary and Scott Fugler. Survivors include her son, Max Fugler of Springs, Texas; daughter, Patsy Clary of Vidalia, La.; brothers, Marvin Lynn Jones of Shreveport, La. and Oswald Hollis Jones of Stanley, La.; sisters, Beatrice Fulth of Stanley, La. and Lorane Crump of Cartridge, Texas; grandchildren, Marty Fugler, Leslie Hinds, Ashley Oliver, Skye Green, Jeffrey Fugler, Richard Fugler and Kelly Ray Clary; and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Guy Hill, Marion Newman, Bill Colvin, Patrick Crump, Tony Byrne and Don Sogga. Honorary pallbearers are Austin Wilson, Red Robertson, John Robertson and James Clary.
