Parish burn ban concerns raised

A burn ban extending 1,500 feet from the city&8217;s borders was put into place at May&8217;s police jury meeting after no show of opposition from the public. The jury, leaving room to alter the ban if the need arose, adopted an ordinance amendment along with the ban.
Monday night the need arose when several citizens showed up for the June meeting to try to get the ban lifted, or at least changed to 300 feet.
&8220;We did kind of leave the door open on this,&8221; board member Randy Temple said to the jury. &8220;I think that 300 feet is realistic.&8221;
The members of the board will look at the ban and hold a hearing to present an amended ban at the 6 p.m., June 26 meeting.
A public hearing will also be held on June 26 to discuss road construction specifications in the Vidalia area. As it stands new areas of construction can build gravel roads while new development is under way and upgrade the roads at a later date.
&8220;What I want to do is upgrade road specifications for new development,&8221; Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington said.
In other business Bill Blair, of Louisiana Spirit&8217;s Hurricane Recovery, gave a short presentation asking for help from the board in finding displaced citizens from Hurricane Katrina living in the area.
&8220;Our organization&8217;s responsibility is to locate and do ground level counseling on individuals that have lost everything,&8221; he said.
Blair said by finding those displaced, resource guides could be given to assist. Help in the form of food, medication, transportation and other things could possibly be given.
