NATCHEZ &8212; Tammy and Mark Greene of Kilgore, Texas made sure they would not let an opportunity to be called Grand Champions of the 2006 Isle of Capri Gals-N-Pals Series slip away this year.
The Greenes backed up their first-round, 7-under par 65 with an even more impressive 10-under par 62 at Beau Pr/ Country Club to finish with a two-day score of 17-under par 127 and a stunning seven-shot win over two-time defending champions Cecelia and John Vinson of Batesville, Ark.
For the Greenes, it was vindication after having the first-round lead in the championship flight only to finish second by two shots behind the defending champion Vinsons last year.
&8220;We tried to back it up this year, but we had some very good competition,&8221; Tammy Greene said about last year&8217;s finish. &8220;It feels good to win.&8221;
The Greenes had eight birdies to go with one bogey in Monday&8217;s first round and no bogeys on Tuesday.
For the Vinsons, it was a bittersweet second-place finish, especially after having a share of the first-round lead with the Greenes with a 65 of their own.
&8220;We didn&8217;t putt nearly as well,&8221; John Vinson said. &8220;They putted a lot better than we did. We played well from tee to green. We just couldn&8217;t get the putts to fall.&8221;
Kim and Lauren McLaurin of Poplarville, who won this tournament in 2002 and 2003, the first two years it was held at Beau Pr/, finished in third place with rounds of 67 and 68 for a two-day score of 135.
We played really well, Lauren McLaurin said. We had a great time. Weve got some new friends.We didnt putt as well as them guys, Kim McLaurin said of the Greenes and the Vinsons. The people around Natchez and the members and the staff at Beau Pr/ treated us friendly.
Bonnie and Ted Wehring of Sealy, Texas rallied from three shots down to win the first flight. The Wehrings struggled to an even-par 72 on Monday, but played solid golf on Tuesday to the tune of a 4-under 68 for a two-day score of 140.
&8220;We don&8217;t expect to win anything,&8221; Bonnie Wehring said. &8220;We were shocked. For us, we played pretty good. We had four birdies, but we also had four bogeys (Monday).
Katie and Andy Speir of Hot Springs Village, Ark., had rounds of 70 and 71 for a two-day score of 141 and second place in the first flight in a scorecard playoff.
Kathy and Dan Murphy, also from Hot Springs Village finished third in a scorecard playoff after rounds of 69 and 72 to finish at 141.
