NATCHEZ &8212; Kevin Smith and Woody Allen broke away from the competition Sunday afternoon by shooting a 9-under-par 63 for a two-day score of 21-under-par 123 to win the 2006 Wharlest Jackson Elks Lodge Invitational at Beau Pr/ Country Club.
Smith and Allen went into Sunday&8217;s final round tied for the lead with Craig and Cole Bradford after both teams had rounds of 12-under-par 60 on Saturday.
&8220;We played good today thanks to Kevin&8217;s putter,&8221; Allen said.
&8220;We weren&8217;t in trouble all weekend,&8221; Smith said. &8220;We just brother-in-lawed real well. We were both hitting the ball close to the hole so we wouldn&8217;t have any long birdie putts. We didn&8217;t have any bad holes.&8221;
Allen and Smith had nine birdies and nine pars in their final round and shared the round of the day with Tommy Geoghegan and C.C. Barnes, who were a few fights back.
But while the winners of the championship flight played another round of solid golf, the Bradfords struggled and ended up with a final-round, 3-under 69 to finish at 129 and a fifth-place finish on a scorecard playoff.
A scorecard playoff also determined second, third and fourth place in the championship flight.
Christian Kreuger and Jason Rooks can thank their lucky stars they finished in second place. Kreuger and Rooks were just one shot out of the lead after shooting an 11-under 61 on Saturday, only to shoot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to finish at 128.
&8220;We played OK,&8221; Kreuger said. &8220;The greens were a lot faster today. The wind was blowing, so that made it a lot tougher out there. I not expecting another 61. I was expecting a 64.&8221;
Chris Hutchins and Chris Kelley finished third after back-to-back rounds 64 put them at 128. Or, as Hutchins jokingly put it, &8220;We tied for second.&8221;
&8220;We played well,&8221; Hutchins continued. &8220;We scrambled when we needed. It was unconventional golf. I look forward to next year. I thank Tom (Matthews) and the Elks Lodge for putting on this tournament.&8221;
Mary Kate Byrne and Neal Partridge shot a final-round, 7-under 65 to finish at 128 and a fourth-place finish.
&8220;We had a pretty good bit of trouble,&8221; Byrne said. &8220;We were 3-under on the front and 4-under on the back. We had a bogey on 11. That cost us big. We didn&8217;t think we wouldn&8217;t be in the top four.&8221;
&8220;The wind was a factor,&8221; Partridge said. &8220;Coming into 18 it played real long. We just didn&8217;t make any putts today.&8221;
Kurt Russ had his first hole-in-one on Beau Pr/s golf course during Saturdays first round on the par-3 16th hole from 140 yards with a 9-iron. Witnesses were teammate Gary Farmer as well as Jordan and Henry Farmer.
&8220;We went crazy,&8221; Russ said. &8220;Yelling and jumping and high-fiving. Gary was most surprised because he told me he had a hole-in-one (on the same hole). He hit it just left of the hole and it went past the hole and sucked back in. I did it the same way. He called the shot.&8221;
Russ said he had a hole-in-one at the old Belwood golf course when he was 20 years old.
This was the second year the Wharlest Jackson Elks Lodge Invitational took place at Beau Pr/.
&8220;We&8217;ve got 36 teams,&8221; Matthews said. &8220;Next year we&8217;ll have 50 teams. The pro over in Hattiesburg, Jeff Hadley, is bring 10 teams with him next year.&8221;
Toms been a good member, Beau Pr/ golf pro Dwayne David said. Hes known throughout the city. Hes got connections. Hes got a lot of good prizes donated by various businesses and companies. Its one of the few tournaments were everybody wins something. We appreciate Kurt for helping pay for part of the bill.
Clay Arnold and Claude Hewitt shot a final-round, 8-under 64 for a two-day score of 129 to win the first flight by one shot over four teams.
&8220;We played real good as a team today,&8221; Hewitt said. &8220;Clay&8217;s a good player. He&8217;s been playing a lot of golf lately and it shows. We enjoyed it. Tom put on a good tournament.&8221;
O.J. Jones and Jack Benson had a final-round 67 for a two-day score of 133 to win the second flight by two shots over the team of Paul Byrne and Wade Heatherly.
Barnes and Geoghegan&8217;s round of 63 enabled them to win the third flight with a two-day score of 133.
&8220;We shot 6-under on the front. We could&8217;ve easily shot 9-under, but we lipped out three putts,&8221; Geoghgan said. &8220;We didn&8217;t make any putts (Saturday). We missed five or six putts within five feet.&8221;
