Families left to celebrate by themselves

VIDALIA &8212; With the fireworks over the river postponed until Saturday, people had to make their own Fourth of July entertainment.
Customers listened to a band on the patio of Comfort Suites&8217; Riverfront Lounge and Restaurant Tuesday. Hot dogs and hamburgers were served. If the fireworks display had taken place, they would have had a great view.
So great a view, in fact, that Stanley Peacock booked four rooms at the Comfort Suites for two nights for his family.
Peacock and his family drove to Vidalia from Mendenhall just to see the fireworks. He made reservations in May for rooms that cost $139 a night.
&8220;We&8217;ve been looking forward to this since May,&8221; Peacock said. &8220;The kids were devastated when they found out.&8221;
Peacock said even if the family bought fireworks, there was nowhere to set them off. If they had been home, he said, they could have set them off in their yard.
He said the family was not coming back for the replacement show scheduled for Saturday.
Hunter Moffett, a front desk clerk at the Comfort Suites, said there were a few like Peacock who stayed at the hotel specifically for the fireworks, but most were there to visit family. Some were planning to stay an extra night to see the fireworks, he said, but after the show was postponed, many of those checked out early.
Some people on the patio were still expecting fireworks.
&8220;We were sitting here waiting,&8221; Lucille Dent said. &8220;I&8217;m going to head home now.&8221;
Dent and her family drove to Vidalia from Woodville. She said they would probably come back for Saturday&8217;s show.
Customers had to slosh through mud Tuesday to get to the TNT Fireworks stand outside Vidalia.
&8220;Business has really picked up since we heard the fireworks were canceled,&8221; Delayna Pickron said as she checked out customers.
&8220;We were going to go,&8221; customer Amber Daniels said. &8220;I guess we&8217;re going to make our own show.&8221;
Summer Crist said she, her husband, Jason, and their two children would attend the rescheduled show on Saturday.
&8220;But we&8217;ve got to have something for the kids tonight,&8221; Crist said.
