NATCHEZ &8212; Many city and county leaders said Thursday they wanted to see a just trial for &8220;Binkey&8221; Vines, whatever the outcome may be. And many local leaders said they consider Vines a friend. Adams County Supervisor Thomas &8220;Boo&8221; Campbell, said he felt for Vines. &8220;I&8217;m not one to serve jury on someone until they&8217;re found guilty,&8221; Campbell said. &8220;If the (allegations) are true, I regret it for him. Being a public official does not eliminate you from making mistakes and being human like everybody else.&8221; Vines turned himself in Thursday and was arrested on an indictment for 13 charges of embezzlement. Supervisor Sammy Cauthen said this was the first time a public official had been indicted since he had been in office. &8220;Whatever happens to him, I&8217;ll assume he&8217;s innocent until proven guilty,&8221; Cauthen said. Vines&8217; arraignment hearing is set for 10 a.m. today. Natchez Mayor Phillip West said he was sorry for what happened to Vines. &8220;I&8217;ve always considered him to be a friend of mine and a friend of Natchez,&8221; West said. &8220;I wish him and his family well.&8221; Vines was elected circuit clerk in 1999. At the time, he promised to streamline office operations to save tax dollars. He was reelected in 2003. Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux Mathis said she would not jump to conclusions until the case was heard. &8220;I believe Binkey is a person who really had Natchez and the job in his heart,&8221; Mathis said. &8220;He has related to all elements of Natchez society. I feel he really wanted to do what was right for Natchez.&8221; Alderman James &8220;Rickey&8221; Gray said he hated to see anyone indicted, especially someone he knew. &8220;I consider him a friend of mine,&8221; Gray said. &8220;You hate to see that happen, but you got to do what&8217;s right.&8221; Alderman Jake Middleton said he did not think the indictment of a public official would reflect negatively on the area. &8220;I am awfully sorry for everyone involved that this happened,&8221; Middleton said. &8220;But things happen every day, and we have to move forward.&8221;
