NATCHEZ &8212; Fleming&8217;s Body Shop, a business on the corner of Old Devereux Street and St. Catherine Street is a nuisance and should be shut down, Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown said Friday.
Residents who live near the building have called to complain about the building, Brown said.
&8220;We&8217;ve been getting requests from residents to shut it down,&8221; Brown said.
The sheriff&8217;s office has filmed drug deals at the building, he said.
&8220;It&8217;s supposed to be a car wash and tire place, but what it really is is a dope haven,&8221; Brown said.
So, the sheriff&8217;s office started handing out petitions this week against the building to neighbors and those who frequent the area, Brown said.
They have about 200 signatures so far, and Brown said he hopes to hand in a stack of signatures to District Attorney Ronnie Harper next week.
&8220;There&8217;s a procedure where you can file a petition in chancery court against a public nuisance,&8221; Harper said.
Once Harper had the petitions, he would present a civil suit in chancery court on the part of the sheriff&8217;s office.
&8220;We would certainly help them any way we could,&8221; Harper said.
But even if the petition was filed next week, the district attorney&8217;s office would have to prepare paperwork, and the court would have to set hearing dates.
&8220;It wouldn&8217;t be something you could do next week,&8221; Harper said.
If the court found it was a public nuisance, it could shut down or put restrictions on the business, Harper said.
