NATCHEZ &8212; It all will come down to Sunday, as 28 of the area&8217;s best golfers are competing this weekend in the Beau Pr/ Cup.
After 36 holes of play, team St. Andrews holds a marginal one-point lead over team Carnoustie.
The tournament is considered to be an annual favorite, as it combines a unique format, along with the added sense of camaraderie felt between those selected to each team.
&8220;This is the best tournament of the year in my opinion,&8221; said Bill Ulmer of the St. Andrews team. &8220;It&8217;s a different format, and very competitive.&8221;
The tournament mirrors the format used in the Ryder Cup, with 18 holes of alternate shot play, 18 holes of four-ball, and 18 holes of single play.
Just being selected to one of the teams is an honor. In order to be on either team a player must qualify through either the club championship, the handicap list or be one of the captain&8217;s selections.
Being named captain is quite the honor as well, with the captains voted upon by the members of each team.
This year&8217;s honorees were Chuck Fields, who is leading team Carnoustie, and P.Z. Brewer of team St. Andrews.
The captain&8217;s selections tend to bring something other than a low-handicap to the tournament, such as Ulmer, who joked about his being paired with Tom Mathews.
&8220;Well, P.Z.&8217;s (Brewer) theory was that Tom (Mathews) plays well enough to fend everyone off on his own,&8221; Ulmer said. &8220;I figure if I can just drive the cart and keep Tom comfortable we&8217;d be okay.&8221;
Unfortunately for Ulmer that theory didn&8217;t play out as planned, as he and Matthews lost on the 18th hole of four-ball play, giving team St. Andrews the one-point deficit, heading into
Sunday.
Tomorrow&8217;s final round will feature 18 holes of singles play, with tee-times starting at 10 a.m.
&8220;We&8217;ve tried to alternate the pin placements to provide a good mix,&8221; Head professional Dwayne David said. &8220;These are 28 of the better players, so we tried to set the course up to separate the men from the boys so-to-speak.&8221;
