PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas &8212; The Alcorn State Braves (2-3, 1-2 SWAC) took a big road win Thursday night with a 17-14 victory at Prairie View A&M.;
The Braves topped the Panthers (2-3, 1-3) despite being out-gained 272-175 in total yardage and turning the ball over twice without forcing a Prairie View turnover.
Leading 10-6 early in the fourth quarter, Nate Hughes sealed the deal with a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown with 9:30 remaining in the game to put Alcorn up 17-6 after Jonathan Williams nailed the extra point.
The Panthers answered back three minutes later with a 33-yard pass from Chris Gibson to Gabriel Osaze-Ediae and an Arnell Fontenot two-point conversion pulled them back within three.
Alcorn was able to hold them out of the end zone for their first conference win of the season.
Vernardus Cooper scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter that put Alcorn up 10-3, and they took a 10-6 lead into the locker room.
Cooper was held in check on the day, gaining only 30 yards on 10 rushing attempts.
Tony Hobson Jr. completed 6-of-13 pass attempts for 79 yards. He was picked off once.
Fontenot gained 121 yards on 19 carries for Prairie View.
