Ballots packed for Saturday&8217;s vote in Louisiana

VIDALIA&8212; Aside from the state representative, members of the school board, police chief, mayor and aldermen, Concordia Parish voters will go to the polls Saturday to vote for a new Secretary of State and Commissioner of Insurance.

According to the League of Women Voters Web site, Mary Chehardy, Republican, has been a real estate salesperson for 40 years.

She has an associate degree in business administration, as well as many courses in various other specialties.

Her past political experience includes working as a polling commissioner for the deputy clerk of court.

James &8220;Jim&8221; Crowley III, Independent, is owner of Coins and Collectable Retail, licensed real estate broker and a notary public.

Crowley graduated in 1979 with a bachelor&8217;s degree from Louisiana State University and lives in Shreveport, La.

He is a former member of the board of directors for the American Red Cross, Board of Realtors, Jaycees Chamber of Commerce, American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations and Teamsters.

Crowley&8217;s political experience includes former Caddo Parish police juror, former member of Democratic State Central Committee, former member of Caddo Parish Democratic Executive Committee and former Chairman of the Board of Caddo Parish Young Democrats.

Republican Jay Dardenne, Baton Rouge, is an attorney for Kennon, Odom and Dardenne, LLC and has been the District 16 State Senator since 1992.

Dardenne graduated with a law degree from Louisiana State University Law Center in 1979.

Dardenne&8217;s political experience includes service on the East Baton Rouge Parish Republican Executive Committee 1992-1996, East Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council 1988 and 1991, and student member of LSU Board of Supervisors in 1977 and 1978.

He also received numerous awards for legislative leadership, including National Republican Legislator of the Year, the Lifetime Achievement Award from Victims and Citizens Against Crime, the Eagle Award from the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling and a national award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for his work with school based health centers.

Mike Francis, Republican, is the owner of Francis Drilling Fluids in Crowley La. and served as chairman of the Republican Party from 1994 to 2000.

Democrat Francis C. Heitmeier, Algiers, La., graduated from Nicholls State University in 1972.

Heitmeier currently serves as senator for District 7, representing Algiers, West Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes.

His other political experience includes serving as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and State Representative, District 102, from 1984 to 1992.

Allen D. Leone Sr., Republican, is a resident of New Orleans and is a realtor and owner of Keller Williams Realty River Parishes.

He received his degree in organizational behavior from Loyola University in 1997 and is a United Way sponsor and a Rebuild Grand Isle sponsor and contributor.

Commissioner of Insurance candidates includes James David Cain, James J. &8220;Jim&8221; Donelon and S.B.A. Zaitoon.

Sen. James David Cain, District-30 lives in Vernon Parish, La.

Cain graduated with a master&8217;s degree in educational administration from McNeese State University.

He was also elected into the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1971.

Republican James J. &8220;Jim&8221; Donelon, New Orleans, is the incumbent for the Commissioner of Insurance.

He is a graduate of Jesuit High School, the University of New Orleans and Loyola School of Law.

In 1986, Donelon became the first recipient of the Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award for the University of New Orleans.

In 1975, Donelon was the elected Jefferson Parish Council Chairman, and from 1982 to 2001 he represented Jefferson Parish in the Louisiana House of Representatives.
