Legislature should focus on Entergy

Mississippi lawmakers will meet in a special session tomorrow with tourism on their minds.
The special session is aimed at providing incentives to help solidify a huge residential and commercial development just south of Memphis.
Included in the plan are several large tourist attractions that could be a boom for the state.
While we appreciate it when lawmakers are considering things to make tourism development easier within the state, we wish the Legislature would also consider clarifying something that created a &8220;wrong&8221; in our minds last week.
The Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that a special contract between Entergy Mississippi and Nissan North America could remain confidential.
The Clarion-Ledger newspaper sought to have details of the contract disclosed. The contract was part of a number of state incentives aimed at wooing the auto-maker to build a manufacturing facility in Canton.
The newspaper argued that the public had a right to know if private citizens were subsidizing the special rate extended to Nissan.
The state&8217;s Public Service Commission had to sign off on the deal, which in our minds makes it a public document. The high court, obviously disagreed.
The Legislature, however, could do the right thing again by clarifying that these deals need to be public, not under-the-table.
Until they &8220;fix&8221; such problems, the public is almost always going to be skeptical of the state&8217;s ability to spend tax dollars wisely.
