VIDALIA &8212; A man jumped from about 18 feet out of his burning house to escape the flames Sunday night.

Concordia Parish Fire Chief Nolen Cothren said he received a call at 8:30 p.m. Sunday that there was a fire at 722 Rokofee Road outside of Vidalia.

&8220;We dispatched two tankers and two fire engines, and a Metro ambulance was there when we arrived,&8221; Cothren said.

The house, Cothren said, was about 18 feet off the ground because it was outside of the levee and the area floods some years.

&8220;About 20 minutes into the incident we heard a man yelling help,&8221; Cothren said. &8220;We looked up and a man had been inside the house all that time. He ran across the porch and dove over the rail to the ground.&8221;

Two firemen grabbed the man and carried him to a trailer house next door.

Cothren said the man, Jess Morace, received first and second degree burns to his arms and face and a slight cut to his face.

Morace was taken to a hospital and released the same night, Cothren said. The house was a camp house that belonged to Wesley Steele and that Morace was living there.

Cothren said firemen were unable to put out the fire because propane tanks were exploding around the house.

&8220;We had to let it smolder but we kept the other trailer next to it watered so it would not catch fire,&8221; Cothren said. &8220;It sustained some damage but it wasn&8217;t that bad.&8221;

Cothren said his team left the scene at 10:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Cothren said.
