No budget shows no leadership

Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! Warning! Danger! Any fans of the 1960s TV series &8220;Lost in Space&8221; will recognize the famous lines from the bulbous robot who always aimed to help.
We couldn&8217;t help but hear those dire warnings when members of the Natchez Board of Alderman decided to essentially pass last year&8217;s budget and then make changes as they see fit throughout the year.
That shows leadership and vision doesn&8217;t it?
Essentially the group collectively said, &8220;We&8217;re too busy to really spend the time to understand the city&8217;s complicated, multi-million-dollar budget, so we&8217;ll just wing it.&8221;
A lack of time and busy personal lives prevented the group from having enough time to properly consider the budget, they said.
Hello, remember folks these people volunteered for this job and each has been through the budgeting process before, so the time requirements should come as no surprise.
OK, so saying they&8217;re passing last year&8217;s budget isn&8217;t 100 percent correct. The board did spend the time necessary to add in their own pay raises, which is still a burr under our saddles.
Aldermen shouldn&8217;t have given themselves an immediate raise. It&8217;s almost unheard of for sitting elected officials to vote themselves a raise mid-term.
Then again, it&8217;s also not normal for a city to just say, &8220;let&8217;s do what we did last year and fix it as we go along&8221; either. Spending of taxpayer money should be planned a bit more carefully.
If that&8217;s the best we can do, perhaps we can find that robot from &8220;Lost in Space.&8221; It could &8220;blind budget&8221; as good as the next person &8212; and would never require a pay raise.
