NATCHEZ &8212; Excelling on the field and off takes want-to and work ethic, something educators at Natchez High think seniors Cameron Logan and Candace Frye have.

The school&8217;s counseling office nominated both students for the Wendy&8217;s High School Heisman Award. They will compete nationally for 12 finalists spots. The finalists are invited to attend the Heisman weekend events in New York City in December.

Logan, a 3.7 GPA student, runs cross country and plays basketball and baseball. He was named the baseball player of the year last year. He spends most of the year in practice for one of his sports, but basketball and baseball are his true loves, he said.

&8220;I do cross country to get ready for basketball,&8221; he said. &8220;I want to go to school and play baseball or basketball.&8221;

He hasn&8217;t picked a college yet, and is hoping scholarship money for one of the sports will help make his decision.

&8220;I want to get away (from Natchez) a little, but stay close, too,&8221; he said.

In the classroom, Logan likes history, but he hasn&8217;t decided on a college major. He has also received awards in geometry and biology.

Logan is the son of Chris and Sheila Logan.

Frye is a three-sport athlete as well, but picking her favorite is easy.

&8220;I wake up in the morning and run,&8221; she said. &8220;Track is my favorite.&8221;

The 3.2 GPA student also plays softball and basketball, but has dreams of making a college career on the track.

She&8217;s considering the University of Houston, but hasn&8217;t made any final plans.

Academics and a degree plan will play a big part in her college choice; she wants to be an anesthesiologist.

Frye is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club and National Honor Society.

Frye is the daughter of Larry Frye.

Both teens said they were surprised and honored to receive the title for their school.

NHS Principal James Loftin said preparing students to be leaders was a main goal at the school.

&8220;Wendy&8217;s High School Heisman is the ultimate award we can bestow on our students for their achievements throughout high school,&8221; he said.
