FERRIDAY &8212; The second-ranked Huntington Hounds rebounded from last week&8217;s loss to Trinity in a big way, pounding fourth-ranked Glenbrook 27-6 at home Friday.

The Hounds (9-1) rolled up 406 yards of total offense while holding the normally high-powered Apaches to only 159 yards in the win.

Huntington head coach Chad Harkins felt his defense was becoming a force to be reckoned with.

&8220;The defense has come around the last few weeks,&8221; he said. &8220;I think they played well tonight. My hat&8217;s off to them. We&8217;ve been playing good ball these last couple of games and I hope we can keep it up.&8221;

Jody Cottongin stole the show, scoring four touchdowns while rushing 19 times for 124 yards and catching a pass for 38 more.

Cottongin scored from one yard out midway through the third quarter to give Huntington a 21-0 lead, and then things got interesting for a while.

The Apaches (6-3) abandoned their rushing attack in favor of throwing the ball, and drove down the field and scored on a three-yard run by Chase Wentz with 6:11 to go in the third. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score 21-6.

After the Apaches forced a Huntington punt, they were again on the move before Dude Harrell forced a fumble by Glenbrook fullback Isaiah Stanley, which was recovered by Kameron Cupit at the Huntington 35 yard line with exactly three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Hounds then took the ball back and took care of business, driving down the field and scoring with 11:50 remaining in the game on a 25-yard run by Cottongin.

Harkins was also pleased with Cottongin&8217;s performance.

&8220;I thought he ran the ball hard,&8221; he said. &8220;He does what we ask him to do each week.&8221;

Cottongin opened the scoring with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 19-yard run. The Hounds elected to go for two, but the try was no good, leaving them ahead 6-0.

After the teams traded punts, Huntington received the ball at the 15 yard line with just under eight minutes remaining, and embarked on an 18 play, 85-yard drive that culminated with 18 seconds remaining in the half on a 38-yard strike from Terrance Johnson to Cottongin. Cottongin then added the two-point conversion to give the Hounds a 14-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The Hounds went for it on fourth down three times on the drive &8212; twice in their own territory and then on the play that scored the touchdown.

Johnson had a solid night in his own right, rushing 15 times for 97 yards and completing 4-of-8 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown without an interception.

The Hounds rushed the ball 65 times as a team for 325 yards.

Harkins was happy with the way his team responded coming off the loss.

&8220;I really felt like we had good practices all week,&8221; he said. &8220;The first half I think we still had some of those jitters, but at halftime I told them they&8217;d had 24 minutes to get the Trinity game out of them, and they came out and played much better on offense and with more intensity.&8221;

The game was the final regular season home game for the Huntington seniors. They will travel to River Oaks next week to close out the regular season.
