FERRIDAY &8212; Coaches in all sports love to practice, but it&8217;s difficult to find out what a team can do until you see them on the floor in a game situation.
Several area coaches got that opportunity Thursday night at the Queen of the Court Jamboree at Huntington.
Six schools &8212; Huntington, ACCS, Amite School Center, Centreville Academy, Tensas Academy and Prairie View Academy &8212; sent their girls varsity and junior varsity teams for 12 20-minute games.
The Huntington varsity Lady Hounds played two games, one, a 17-8 loss to Tensas and the other a 14-14 tie with Centreville in overtime.
Lady Hound head coach Penny Moak said she had seen good and bad with her team over the two games.
&8220;We played Tensas earlier and I was really disappointed in that one,&8221; Moak said. &8220;I felt we played a lot better (against Centreville). We have a lot of sophomores on this team, and this was their first high school game. It wasn&8217;t really, but it felt like it to them. We&8217;ll get a lot better. We played pretty well defensively. I feel like we&8217;re where we need to be there. Offensively, we&8217;ve got a lot of work to do to improve as the season goes along.&8221;
ACCS head coach
Chuck Bauerle, whose team took a win over Amite School Center and a loss to Centreville, had many of the same feelings.
&8220;We did all right,&8221; Bauerle said. &8220;On defense, we seemed a step slow and wound up holding a lot. We played aggressively but we got called for a lot of fouls. It was a 20-minute game and they were in the double bonus with about 10 minutes to go. We&8217;ve got a new coach, and two or three new starters, so I thought we did all right.&8221;
Both coaches felt they had identified problem areas to work on before the season begins in earnest next week.
&8220;The biggest thing I think we need to work on is shooting,&8221; Moak said. &8220;I also didn&8217;t think we did a very good job blocking out.&8221;
&8220;I thought we played hard,&8221; Bauerle said. &8220;We&8217;ve just got to work on turnovers. That was the biggest thing, that and fouling.&8221;
