CAWS no longer working for parish

VIDALIA &8212; Lisa Smith and the members of the Concordia Animal Welfare Shelter board gave up their title as humane officers at Monday night&8217;s regular police jury meeting.
But Smith said relinquishing the post, granted by the police jury, would not affect the way they do business.
&8220;We are going to continue to basically do what we&8217;ve always done, which is to promote animal welfare throughout the parish and keep the number of stray pets off the streets,&8221; Smith said.
What giving up the humane officer post would do, Smith said, is limit the society to handling animal cruelty cases and leave the responding of animal nuisance calls up to parish law enforcement agencies like Concordia Parish Sheriff&8217;s Office and Vidalia and Ferriday&8217;s police departments.
&8220;We simply do not have the manpower to respond to nuisance calls, so we mainly handle animal cruelty cases,&8221; Smith said.
Police jury President Melvin Ferrington said he regrets CAWS&8217;s decision.
&8220;They (CAWS) do a good job with basically no money to work with,&8221; Ferrington said. &8220;I personally don&8217;t want to see them resign.&8221;
In a brief, listing the services and other data compiled by CAWS, the shelter generates revenue through adoption fees, private donations, fundraisers and grants.
Secretary Russell Wagoner said giving up the title of humane officers would not affect the shelter&8217;s right to request the jury to right grants.
