LAPLACE, La. &8212; St. Charles Catholic played their second round playoff game against Ferriday like the Comets have played every game all year, by running Jonathan Cancienne early and often.

Cancienne had 145 yards and three touchdowns in the Comets&8217; 48-13 victory over the Trojans on Friday.

&8220;We were pretty unsure coming into the ball game,&8221; Head coach Frank Monica said. &8220;We didn&8217;t know how much they would throw at us, and we have a very young line so we were worried on how our boys would handle them.&8221;

The Comets controlled the line of scrimmage all game and scored touchdowns on their first five possessions

&8220;I have to give a lot of credit to our line, both offense and defensive,&8221; Monica said. &8220;They came out, played hard and proved a lot.&8221;

The Comets drew first blood when junior running back Jonathan Cancienne capped off a seven play drive with a 15 yard touchdown run.

&8220;My offensive line came out very strong today,&8221; Cancienne said. &8220;We scored on our first five possessions, and the line had been struggling the past few weeks, but they really stepped it up tonight. I&8217;m really proud of them.&8221;

St. Charles&8217; offense continued to roll on their second possession, driving 51 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a Matt Walters one-yard touchdown.

Trailing 12-0, Ferriday came firing back on the ensuing possession, traveling 75 yards in 13 plays, cutting the Comet lead to 12-7.

After a series of penalties pinned the Comets on their own 12 yard line, St. Charles looked to running backs Matt Walter and Jonathan Cancienne for support, and they delivered, combining for 80 yards, including a three-yard Cancienne touchdown

On the ensuing possession after being held three and out the Trojans lined up to punt, but the snap was high and the Comets recovered on the one yard line.

One play latter Matt Walters walked into the end zone for the score, giving St. Charles a 27-7 halftime lead.

&8220;That play helped out a lot,&8221; Coach Monica said. &8220;we actually had a punt block on but they made an unfortunate error and we capitalized on it.&8221;

If the Trojans thought they could mount a come back their hopes were dashed by Jonathan Cancienne when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 55 yards, and broke free on following play for a 23 yard touchdown.

&8220;We went into half time and it was still a close game,&8221; Cancienne said. &8220;We wanted to come out and break their will and that&8217;s what we did.&8221;

Cancienne finished with over 200 total yards.

St. Charles will travel to play Stearling next week in the state quarterfinals.
