VIDALIA &8212; Vidalia Police Chief Billy Hammers said he is going to get to the bottom of the recent burglaries that have occurred on Carter Street.
On Nov. 5, Vidalia Auto Glass, C&M Detail building and its deer processing plant were burglarized.
The same three businesses were broken into on Oct. 3, along with a few cars at Auto Wholesale, Hammers said.
&8220;In either case, nothing major was broken or stolen. But it is a nuisance,&8221; Hammers said.
Owner of C&M Auto Glass Dan Cavin said the burglaries were mostly acts of vandalism by people he suspects were on foot.
&8220;The first time they (the suspects) came through a window, unlocked the door to the office and really just trashed the place,&8221; he said.
Cavin said the suspects also threw the cash register out the window and stole all the change minus the pennies, which amounted to about $8.
&8220;This second time they dumped every drawer and broke into one of my delivery cars, pulled the dash out and tried to hot wire it,&8221; Cavin said. &8220;It cost me more money the last time.&8221;
Cavin said he was going to let VPD handle the case but to be on the safe side, he now parks the cars closer to the street in hopes that someone would see anyone trying to vandalize them and he keeps all the money on him when he locks up.
Hammers said he has questioned one suspect but it is difficult to pinpoint anyone else for the crimes because fingerprinting them has been difficult.
Hammers said he plans to install motion sensor cameras around the three businesses, but is still shopping for some affordable and effective ones.
&8220;I&8217;m hoping with publication of this information, the people responsible will stop. But if they&8217;re foolish enough to try it again, the cameras will catch them next time,&8221; he said.
